I've lived neaar NY all my life; my impression was "sewage" ie; houshold waste-water, including "Mr. Hankie" goes to sewage treatment plants. These plants occasionally experience breakdowns or powwer failures, and next day, it's a headline news event - litterally.

What does flow into NY harbor, and many rivers and streams in the US, is "run-off" ie; rainwater flowing in gutters. Next to the bazillions of gallons per minute the hudson river delivers, a few ounces of dog pee (we scoop) is nothing. You'd be disgusted to consider what fish do in the cleanest rivers! (They copulate, exchanging all the nasty slimy stuff, without touching each other. EEEEW!) Not to mention eat, defacate etc. River otters, snakes, bears, ducks geese etc all use pristine waterways for toilets. Natural biological processes take care of all of it.

The Hudson is far, far cleaner than it's been in the past 40 years. Sail with confidence.
