It seems that RC treat DNF's the same as DNS's....points equal one more than the total boats registered.

Why is this?

Shouldn't those that make it to the start (but not finish) get a better score than those that drink coffee (or beer) on the shore?

And what is the proper protocol when racing, and clearly last, with a leg (or two) to complete...while everyone is waiting to go again? I'd just assume sail to the start and line them up again; however, if you don't finish, and queue up for another start you get a DNF (scoring the same as a DNS) and making everyone else wait more time.

Terry I think this would be better discussed in the general discussion area. You will get more replies with good knowledge.

Sorry I am not of much help, but now that you bring it up I am compfused (intentional misspelling) myself.

I hope nobody will be anything but understanding if you are a leg or two behind and you decide to sail your proper course. However, if you are that far behind, alone, it might be smart to 'finish' and let the RC know you are throwing the race so you can start again. Reason? Becouse you will learn more by sailing with the fleet than a leg behind. The extra point you gain that way really dont matter as you are very last.
Add another boat or two with matching speed, and it is a very different matter. Then you have to consider the time limit and wether you can finish in time, often 30minutes or something behind the first boat to finish.

I must say that I dont see much difference between DNS and DNF. Either three letter "reward" is disasterous for your result and one point more or less dont matter much. At least that is my opinion. However, I despise scoring a DNF more than a DNS, becouse then I have broken something on the boat. A DNS becouse of the weather (decision to race) or something I broke earlier and have not repaired yet is easier to accept.

Why? Because that's what para A4.2 of RRS says!

If you're talking about a series that is "longer than a regatta" (eg a series with races over several weekends) then the coffee/beer drinkers shouldn't be scored as DNS (which would be starters + 1), they should be scored as DNC (which is entrants + 1). That's designed to cover a situation where some people can't attend every day there's a race. It does mean that the guy who stays ashore doesn't gain an advantage on the guy who is on holiday/away on business/too hung over to get out of bed but lets the person who sails to the starting area and then decides he's too hungover and should be back in bed to gain some advantage on them both.

Ahh, right. I was not aware of that.
I am not having a good regatta with either "score" anyway <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

If you want to score DNS at a weekend regatta... You must take count before every race (eg within 1/2 hour before the starting gun you are sailing in the starting area... )This is a hell of burden on the RC! Especially in large multiclass events.
