As far as Americans being wasteful, in 1996 when I was in college I learned that the US uses some 25% of the world's resources whilst comprised of 2% of the world's population. I mean, this isn't new news.

ohhhh nooo. How can such inequities exist in this day and age? Boo ... hoo ...

I could care less what you do with you life. Just don't tell me how to live mine. If not having kids is your bag, then go for it. I don't have kids, nor have any plan to have any. I really can't stand little runts.

Spice = oil..

If you get frustrated, why not follow Boudiccas excellent advice? You are not on Iwo Jima raising the flag with the marines..

On the other hand, I did not want kids either, but look what happened. Safe periods aren't and the climate is changing <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Hey Tad,

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Instead of doing the usual regatta party at the YC, we took the entire regatta crowd to the race track last Sat night. We had a blast watching the Legends, stocks, and modifieds go round and round. Just like us, only faster...

Mike: ahhh!!!!! Damnit!! those bastards were racing until 10:30 pm, and then right back at it at 7:30AM on Sunday morning!

I thought 5 miles was far enough away from the race track. Guess I'm the dumbass for buying a house this close.

I think Boudicca missed one hypothetical outcome

Global warming is CORRECT
That everyone knows about it is CORRECT
The world changes its behavior

The earth still heats up and we all drown or go extinct (as Wouter indicates) because the climate changes faster than the human race's ability to adapt.

We are pumping more greenhouse gas into the atmosphere now than in 1800, yet the climate has been warming steadily since then. Does this mean the greenhouse gases they put in the air in 1900 was somehow able to affect the climate more effectively then? (ie., was their CO2 somehow "badder" than ours?).

Or, is the climate changing faster now than in the late 1800s.

Has the earth's temperature increased at the same rate (minus a lag time) as the greenhouse emissions? I know that human greenhouse gas production increased almost geometrically for the last 100 yrs, so did the climate change match (Even granting a lag time) this increase?

If not, would that leave the possibility open that there are other factors beside humans at work? And that these factors are not under our control?

I do believe in maximizing efficiency (in sailing, driving, etc.) to reduce energy input, regardless of my ability to control the climate. Waste is, well, wasteful. But at least in USA we have the freedom to be wasteful if we so choose.

I beg to differ...here is a graph that shows a estimate of temperatures for the last 1000 years.

http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/paleo/ctl/clisci1000a.html
Copyright: NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC)

And another one showing the temperature from 1860 till now.

http://www.grida.no/climate/vital/17.htm
Copyright: United Nations Environment Programme

And one more just for fun.

http://www.unc.edu/~sstaff/images/hockeystick.jpg

I see a increase in temperatures in the last 100 years. Now i see it as two things. Either generated by the presence of humans or the planet being 4.5 billion years old is just going through another inevitable cycle. I just hope im in a better place along with my future children and grand children before things turn sour.

Just my 2 cents.

My vote is with Maughan if we are taking a poll. (Except for kids being a pain in the butt.) I don't ask for anything in this world but to be left alone. I try not to tell anyone else how to live their life and I want the same courtesy. I don't want the Global Warming "people" looking down their nose at me either, Maughan. AND BOY, DO THEY EVER!. Same bunch that drove the smokers out into the cold and make us all wear helmets for every possible activity (I'm waiting till they realize how dangerous bathrooms are so we have to wear a helmet to take a crap!).
Personally, I find it .........curious that they can ignore the assertion that higher temps CAUSE higher CO2 not the other way around. And that the biggest contributor of CO2 is our own oceans. Always ignore the facts that don't support your thesis.

I'd like to go back to discussing sailing anytime folks....
Greg

Anything that gives us more sunny sailing days in the Northwest, (past couple of years at least), can't be all bad.
Now if the water would just warm up.

Big Marine Lake, Minnesota

The temperature on my home thermometer hit 84 F.
The official temperature in Minneapolis was a record setting 81 F.

And today it is average and tomorrow will be cooler than average by a few degrees. Hmmmm. I guess that freek 48hrs of warm weather has made me a believer. But wait, what about the freak cold weather last month? When it was 30-40 degrees cooler than average. I'm so confused............ I miss sailing. The ice went out on quite a few lakes yesterday. I'm not brave enough for hypothermia yet.

Isn't the ocean one of the biggest absorbers of atmospheric CO2...?

And another point of view...

Don't forget to blame live-stock for releasing too much methane, another greenhouse gas. Oh, but hang-on, we only grow so many of them so that we can eat them.

It's gonna be interesting to see what happens in the next 50 or so years. I suspect the sustainable countries are going to thrive (economically and socially), maybe not because they are sustainable, but because they give-a-[censored] and become popular trading partners.

Only one solution in my books, reduce populations over time. It's the only thing I "sort-of" agree with Maugan about, HAVE LESS KIDS!

PS. And yes, LED's sound like a very good idea, last for ages and use very little power. Skip the bloody mercury laced fluros.

Some Europeans figured out a pill to give cows that, when combined with a strict diet, completely eliminates their farts AND has the added side effect of producing MORE milk.

God do I love technology.

Do you think I could get some of those? Not for the milk of course! <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
