Wondering if anyone out there might have a couple of totalled out Hobie 20 hulls. Or maybe you have a totalled out port or starboard hull.

I have deck ports installed in my Hobie 20 just aft the front cross bar. I just hate them. The crew is always stepping on them, then they get broken, then I have to replace them, and it goes on and on. I've probably replaced 6 of them since buying the boat in 1999. On top of that, the deck seems to be getting a bit soft in that area.

So, I figure I have about four options:

1. Do nothing, keep sailing boat.

2. Sell boat, sell problem, then buy new boat!

3. Have glass expert build a new deck.

4. Find a section of deck from someone for each hull, then have my local fiberglass expert (builder of the Supercat) glass it in!

Anyone got any donor hull decks???

Thanks,

Tim J.

What do you mean by "builder of the Supercat"?

Option #7 Glue broken glass pieces to the top of the port cover. No one will step on it more than once.

That would be Tom Haberman, builder of the Supercat, who does excellent fiberglass repair work as well.

The Supercat is manufactured by Aquarius Sail in Wyoming, Minnesota. They make several hi tech boats designed by Bill Roberts.

Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck! Everyone's a comedian! Keep your day jobs, boys!

I like the idea of the crew fixing. Funny how my crew can never understand why I get so pissed and annoyed when this stuff happens, but perhaps there's a direct correlation between who pays for the repair, and who ends up being annoyed!

That brand of porthole, Viking, is notorious for breaking through. When they added the "O" ring years ago, it weakened the support ring too much.

The Tigers use a different brand ( Beckson? ) which appears to be made of a tougher plastic. I haven't heard of any of them breaking through yet.

yeah - my crew thinks it's funny (or annoying) how I keep reminding them to screw the lid back on immediately after opening a port on the water. My girlfriends thinks I'm being obsesive but I've had to cover those things with duct tape after they go swimming far too often! I finally drilled a hole and attached it with a small string. I've got the smaller ports so I don't have the breakage problems but I feel your pain.

Why is your crew standing up on that part of the deck?
