It occured to me that in a 2-line spinnaker system (tack line + halyard/dousing line), that
  • There is a slack sucker bungee to take slack out of the dousing line.
  • There is a bungee to take up the slack from the tack line.
  • And the 2 can be connected.
The neat think about using 1 bungee instead of 2 is that pulling the tack line eases the slack sucker bungee exactly when you want. The advantages of easing the slack sucker bungee are:
  • The lack of tension on the halyard means it does not want to wrap around and grab fingers/hands during the hoist/douse.
  • The lack of tension on the dousing line prevents it from deforming your spinnaker shape.
  • You can use a more substantial bungee for a tidier boat.
  • You might be able to eliminate the bungee altogether, and use the tail of a long tack line to suck the slack out of the dousing line.
Since I don't have a snuffer on my boat, I wonder if anyone else has tried this, or is willing to?

We don't run a bunji on the snuffer line but instead use one continuous line for both functions. This way, when you pull the halyard/sail up, the snuffer line also goes up and takes with it the slack from the halyard going up. There is very little slack line between the two.

The other issue is that you do not want the snuffer line to have any pressure on it (bunji) while the sail is up or it will distort the sail shape.

You dont need a bungee on the tackline because it only needs to be pulled about a meter.
