What's in your on-board spare parts bag? #10270

I pose this question to those whom have done some cruising - when you're miles away from your trailer and vehicle. Beyond the standard fare of shackles, rings & pins, drain plug, gudgeon pins and extra line, what do you carry on board? Do you bring a spare shroud or forestay? Extra blocks and cleats? What about spare battens? What's in your emergency spare parts bag?

You missed:

tools. Such as a Leatherman all-purpose tool. You got all these parts, no way to install them.

Small bullet blocks. We dropped a mast one time and with the use of a bullet block hung on the bridle, and line tied from the forestay, run thru the block and back to the jib sheets we were able to restep the mast ON THE WATER.

Rather than carrying extra shrouds &c. a better idea is to CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT FREQUENTLY and REPLACE RIGGING OFTEN. Waxing the rigging offers extra protection...

If you bring a decent long line (I keep two on board), they can be used for lashing, towing, or as a make-shift shroud/stay. They're easier to store and more multi-purpose than extra stays.

And never leave shore without a pair of vice grips (they can do everything from cut line to hold a rudder on), line (as already suggested), spare shackles and some duct tape -- you can jury-rig almost anything with those items.

I add bailing wire to my list. With Bailing wire and duct tape, I can fix anything.

Kinda sounds like that Credit Card Commercial,

"What's in your wallet?"

These have been some good items to advise.

One time, offshore of Galveston Is., I hailed ready about, and just as I happened to look up, I see the Lee Shroud dangling on the lee side of the main. Yikes, hold everything,(no pun intended).

I didn't have ANY spare parts at the time with me. After proceding on the same tack, I realized I could use the pin I use for my mast-step captive ball! We took it off the ringy thing, and put it where my clevis had worked it's way out. 'Member that one Bruce, chapter 1. (inside joke) Now it holds my spin block with a shackle.
