So who's goin'????

I'm now up in the air....all the on again, off again, crew issues, etc...really makes it hard on those of us coming from the great white north!! Especially with the Alter Cup going on, I need to know there will be boats there if I'm coming all the way down there.....

I just talked to Warren Green, and he said the race is DEFINITELY on, no matter how few or many boats show up, because he wants to keep the race alive. They are working out details and will get the information back to us to post on the forum very soon.

Right now what is known for sure is that the race is going to have a water start on the ocean side at the Islander Motel in Islamorada. Registration will be done when you arrive at the Islander. There will be a rigging area for boats and an area for the trailers.

There will be people on site to handle registration the evening before the start, and they are planning some kind of social function at the Islander the evening before, too.

The stop for the first night will be in Marathon, but at a different part of the Sombrero Beach than in past years.

That's all I could find out for now. Warren said more information will be coming soon.

I'm in. Eric Roberts/Curt Johnson, ARC 22. I've heard from some other of the Florida boys who are game as well. Should be a decent turnout.

team cyberspeed in. I have to work but Rob Behrend will be taking over the reigns. Kinda silly not to do it since the boat is already down there after the MKL.

Warren Green is working hard to get a NOR out to you. As soon as it is complete, I will post it here and on the front page of the site as a headline story.
There will be some changes that could be quite interesting. It appears that the start will be at the Islander in Islamorada on the water and sail north to a rounding mark and then south to Marathon (different beach, too)

That could be good inasmuch as launching space on the bayside was starting to get scarce.
Stand by,
Rick

OK, Here is the official NOR (Notice of Race)
Contact Info:
Warren Green; phone 321-544-1512 and email: wgreen3262@bellsouth.net

Notice of Racing
Hog’s Breath Keys 100
Beach Catamaran Ocean Race

100 Mile race from Islamorada to Key West Florida,
April 28 – 29, 2007. This will be a two day race; Day one from Islamorada to Marathon and Day two from Marathon to Key West Florida.

1. This will be an Open Class Race for Catamarans of 18 to 22 feet and equipped with a spinnaker or reaching sail. The race committee reserves the right to qualify a boat for the race. Please call if there are any questions. (Warren Green, Phone 321 773 2391 or 321 544 1512 (cell), or Rick White: (305-619-1922, (Rick's Cell). This race will governed by the latest version of the Racing Rules of Sailing except as modified herein.

2. General: This is the annual Hog’s Breath 100 race with a few changes. Due to early thoughts of cancelling, hotel arrangements will be on your own, in a sparse market. A potential hotel list included herein. Prepare yourself for a great race, with some differences this year. Information that follows may be altered somewhat as planning and conditions dictate, protecting the essentials of the race, but allowing corrections, with short notice preparations still in work. Any changes will be announced on the Cat sailor web site (www.catsailor.com) and at the Skippers meeting.

Important considerations, please read carefully: There are no chase boats, so please be prepared to fend for yourself.
· You will be rewarded for assisting a boat in trouble (keep track of your time in doing so).
· You may paddle or get off and push at anytime to avoid or escape shallow water.
ABILITY AND SAFETY
· To attempt this race, you must be competent, able sailors, knowing how to do such things as:
o Right your own boat.
o Read navigational charts.
o Read the water color for shoals.
o Anchor your boat in case of a peril of any kind
o Ride out squalls and storms.
o All sailors must wear an approved PFD, all boats must have one throw able PFD attached or safely stored on your boat, you must have all USCG required safety equipment aboard, plus a waterproof chart, waterproof flashlight, a cell phone in waterproof bag, legal lighting, a whistle and/or strobe attached to your PFD and an adequate anchor and line. (The last item seems silly until you are disabled and drifting away from shore in a strong wind.)
o Suggested additional equipment: 406 MHz EPIRB, waterproof VHF Radio, and a waterproof GPS.
o Both skipper and crew must write the emergency telephone number on their arm or sleeve (waterproof pens will be available) – (321 544 1512, (Warren’s Cell) or 305-619-1922, (Rick's Cell)) -- these are telephones that will be manned through out the race. If you are retiring from the race or broken down, you must call this number as soon as safely permitted. Otherwise, we might be sending the USCG after you. Should no one answer, leave a message.
o Do not forget to take essentials like water, sun-block, and energy food.
3. Registration: A registration form is included herein and may be copied, completed and emailed to Warren Green at email address wgreen3262@bellsouth.net or posted to Warren Green, 18 Spinnaker Point Court, Indian Harbour Beach, FL 32937. If using the postal method, registrations must be Post marked prior to April 20, 2007. Any registrations not completed prior to this date must be first announced by phone to 321 544 1512, (leave a message if not answered) and second, followed by a registration form presented at registration as stated below. Registrations emailed will require signatures at check in. Registration will continue for late comers at pool side, at the Islander Resort from 5 – 8 PM Friday April 27th or 8 – 9 AM Saturday April 28th. Boats may be stored over night on April 27th by the Islander Resort at the beach near the Islander Water Sports area. Personnel at the water sports area will give instructions for placement. Trailers may be stored in the parking area, east of the Resort. Boats must be unloaded in the parking area, but not on the beach, then they will be rolled on Cat-Tracks to the beach area. There will be no vehicles in the beach area! Be cautious of beach goers in the resort. Create as little interference as possible with resort residents. (Any social gathering the night before will be announced at a later date, if any.)

4. An entry fee of $60.00 will be charged this year. Checks will be received by mail if you post your registration or check/cash at check in at registration at the Islander Resort. Please make checks payable to: “Hogs breath Keys Catamaran Race”. Bad checks will be recorded for future reference, meaning, only cash will be accepted for those entrants in the future, if permitted to race at all; and advice will be provided to other race committees.

4. There will be a safety inspection of all safety equipment during race preparations. Required safety equipment is as stated above in paragraph 2. Third party Liability Insurance protection is required; your policy must be shown at registration. (This is normally carried in your boat insurance; ……be sure.) There is a statement on the registration form requiring each skipper and crew to sign to his or her assurance that the boat and crew are in compliance and safe operating condition.

5. Skippers meeting: Before the race, at 9:00AM, Saturday April 28, 2007 All skippers must be present or shall be considered DNS and out of the race with no refunds and no recourse. Changes may be briefed at this meeting so attendance is vital.
.
6. The Course and Point of Departure: Start Time: 10:00AM GPS time, Saturday, April 28, 2007.

The First leg to Marathon. There will be A water start off the pier at the Islander Resort in Islamorada for a north easterly leg (up wind hopefully) to marker Flashing Red #2 off the shores of Tavernier Key. This is a 16 foot tall piling marker; there will be a boat in the water recording boats making passage. GPS position for this mark is approximately N 25 00’ 33” and W 80 28’ 95”. At the turn, the course will return back past the Islander start line yellow marker, leaving this marker to port, for a “fly by” before continuing on to Marathon. (This course is 55 miles long and will assure a 100 mile course and keep the integrity the Race.) The first leg will end in a water finish just west of Sombrero Beach, Marathon, near Sister Creek. There is a rock cropping at the west end of the beach for committee standing/timing and a large yellow West Marine floating mark further off shore establishing the line. Race finish line marks will be briefed at the skippers meeting, before racing begins. Boat storage will be provided in a grassy area behind a locked fence for overnight stay. In this area, there will be no issue with nesting turtles as has been with Sombrero Beach. "BOATS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE SWIMMING AREA." The county is very strict on this, and breaking this rule could prevent future use of this location (the only feasible location for this event). The beach will be guarded.
The Second leg from Marathon to Key West. We will have water start off shore from the rock formation at the west end of Sombrero Beach to Key West. The same yellow marker will identify the starting line. Again, stay clear of the marked swimming area. Start time will be at 10:00AM Sunday April 29, 2007. Finish will be at Smather’s Beach, Key West as in years past. Markers for the finish will be briefed at the skippers meeting. Hopefully, Trophies will be awarded at the Hog’s Breath Saloon, Key West.

7. Trophies. Rick White will be the official scorer. Times will be recorded, passed to his office and positions returned to the finish area. Trophies will be awarded and if time will allow, a new perpetual trophy will be inaugurated, but, if time does not permit, the First Place race winner will be designated and posted on this trophy before next years race. The perpetual trophy will be kept in the Hog’s Breath Saloon. Race results will be given to each participant either at race end or, if the crew has departed from race end, to each mailing address provided. Trophies will be awarded for the first three places and a “Best over All Time” award. Another special trophy is being discussed. (Judgment of Race Committee) (This will have nothing to do with the class of sailboat or winning)

Information notes; Early in April it looked as if there would be no Hog’s Breath race but communication with the Hog’s Breath Saloon and discussions among sailors led to an early recommitment to keep this race alive. We now have new management and a commitment to continue the race into the future. Dave Calvert sends his best wishes and promises to stay involved. With new management, we are looking to the sailors for guidance as to what would be better for you. Already discussions are under way to see if we can turn this race into a tune up race for the Tybee 500 with conversation, attempting to coordinate activities. Discussions will continue for the Triple Crown concept. Due to miscommunications and late work we are unsure of turnout this year but we plan to start early next year for a full commitment to racing for ’08. The objective of the future is: 1) Make it a safe and challenging, but fun race for all: 2) Make the race reasonable from a cost perspective for all to be in the market for this ocean race. 3) Generate as much interest in several classes as is practical. 4) We want to tie this race to the time period between the Miami Key Largo race and the Tybee 500 using weekend timing for more participation. 6) This is an ocean race so safety and safety equipment will be emphasized. Further discussions will be entertained at the skippers meeting before the race.

Hey Rick,

Thanks for keeping us informed!! I'll be coming down on my 20 as part of the Miami/Key Largo race and will be leaving my boat set up between races. I need a good place to leave it on the beach as I will likely want to sail a few days during the week as well. I was thinking of the place where we launched for Steeplechase last December unless you can think of a better place?? In any event, do you have their name and contact info?

Joe,
The problem is that you would still have to drop the mast and trailer the boat down to Islamorada for the Hog's Breath. If were you, I would call Warren Green and ask him where you might be able to keep the boat over on the ocean side at or near the launch site.

But if you want to pull it out at Key Largo Boating & Watersports Club (next to the Caribbean Club) and leave it there during the week in between and THEN break it down and take it south, the number there is 305-453-4848.

Yeah, I guess you could go through the Snake Creek lift bridge, or go farther south to Channel 5 (which would be like sailing almost half of the Steeplechase).

Snake Creek is closer, but make sure you have a way of contacting the bridgetender -- and watch out for the current. If it is going from Bay to Ocean, you may not have a choice about waiting for the bridge to go up (have an anchor ready). And if it is going from ocean to bay, you might have a hard time getting through the bridge (have a paddle ready). <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Rick:

So 18-22 ft. No F-16's in this race? Are they not OK for distance races?

Rick does not have anything to do with the organization of this race. You will have to direct questions to Warren Green. But I think his notice of race is pretty clear about what boats are allowed.

It says 18-22, just was curious why the F-16 where not included. No big deal, I am just thinking about getting a a Blade in the future.

Hi, my name is Warren Green, running the Hog's Breath race. Folks who are arriving from the M - KL race and planning the HB race, may leave their boats at the Islander Resort, but must, repeat MUST, check in with Islander Resort Water Sports, for location. No motor vehicles on the beach area and trailors must be left in the east parking lot. Check in with Water Sports before 305 522 4944.

Why no F-16's. Was curious to see how the Blade would do in a distance race against the other boats.

Hi, I am Warren Green. If you have a spinnaker or reaching sail, rigged for use; and will sail with crew of two meeting a minimum weight of 290# and can meet the other criteria in the NOR, you may enter the race. wgreen3262@bellsouth.net [color:"blue"] [/color]
