Hi All,

As I hadnt seen a post about this yet, I thought I should add one to see who was thinking of going, and put the idea into those that didnt know/remember.

Queens birthday weekend, cold wind, warm water, maybe new wetsuits! - I am looking forward to the grass at the waters edge

Latrobe Valley Yacht Club, June 9 -11. NOR is on the Mossie website

I'm intrigued by sailing in some warm water and have some questions, where do the Mosquito sailors stay? I have heard it is very cold, if you dont get one of the powered tent sites, can you have a fire? It is called a pondage, I haven't sailed on a pond before, how big is it?

Darryn,

Most if not all the Mozzie sailors camp at the pondage along with nearly everyone else and yes you can have camp fires. I can't think what it would be like without a camp fire in the middle of winter.

As for the size of the pondage lets just say that it's big enough to run a full size course and then some.

A link to the Latrobe Valley Yacht Club with the notice of race, maps etc is listed below:

Regards,

Peter

p.s. Make sure you bring a good warm sleeping bag.

Darryn,

There are also some good photos of the Hazelwood Pondage in the VMCA photo album under 2006 State Titles, 2006 Sauna Sail and 2006 Training.

From one South Aussie to another Darryn, the course size is just fine (after Milang you will have no problems), flat water (even “steamy”), and the whole event is a load of really great fun (even though it is in the land of people who only try to play Aussie rules football), The guys sailing there all seem to know how to sail and all the organisers are really friendly and do an excellent job with the event, and the camping on site generates real camaraderie, BUT! It is COLD and at last years event we opted to stay at a nearby motel (which we thought was very well priced) and I am glad that we did. Every night sleeping in a clean bed in a heated room with cable TV made getting on the water next day a hell of a lot easier than crawling out of a sleeping bag with joints that were stiff from a cold nights sleep. There’s something quite surreal about walking to your boat in the morning and breaking off the ice that has formed overnight. Seems easier to adjust to if you have just come from a warm room after a hot breakfast and an even hotter shower!

Darryl how far is it from Adelaide? does it cost to stay at the campsite? do you have to bring your own fire wood?

it does cost to stay at the camp sites, I hope the cost is mentioned in the link in Peter F's reply.

Bringing your own firewood is recommended, though for you it would be a long way to bring it. Best to make friends, which is generaly not to hard, just take something to share with you as you wander around the campsites .

Think the Croweaters must be a bit soft though, weather was quite mild last year , I remember years where there was snow on the hills around the back of the Pondage. Mind you I stay with family generaly, as I grew up in the area, nothing like Mother in laws hospitality .

Hazelwood is about 1&1/2 hours from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Pondage area is aproximately mile by mile and 1/2. It is a regatta you have to do at least once in your sailing career, an experience like no other, careful some get addicted and haven't missed many since it started in the early 70's.

Gary,

I couldn't find the exact cost but found a link with a phone No. for the office at the camping ground:

http://svc065.wic437d.server-web.com/images/latrobe/camping.pdf

From memory it was less than $10 per adult per day and less for kids.

Regards,

Peter

Hi Peter,

it is possible a New Production F16 Blade may be at the Sauna Sail, but at this stage I have hedged my bets . Due to a kind offer from Neil J, I will be sailing his Mossie with spinnaker .

Just can't stay away from a good thing .

Weather forecast for next weekend looks good so I've packed up the Mozzie for the trip on Saturday morning.

Yes they have the camping open for Friday night. The Mozzies are usually behind the clubhouse (across the road).

I'll be there - probably arriving Saturday morning, and so will Gary Maskiell (on Neil Joiner's boat).

I think PWS will be there Friday night.

Another Toy should be there Friday night sometime, as I can't see myself getting up early enough to get there on time otherwise

Fat Bomber will be there Saturday morning after a flat tyre made today impossible.
