Having come from the great white north, and having sped over the ice at over 80mph I think we tropical sailors should offer some time share swaps to the the iceboat guys up north. Picture sloloming through ice shanties under a full moon at speeds in excess of what you drive on the way to work and have some good folks come down and visit the sun and give you a good lutkefiske resipe?

I haven't yet had a ride on an iceboat, but have several friends who have them in our local club. Watch out for icefishing houses when you're going that fast!!



I'm very Norwegian, and know all about lutefisk, but would never actually eat the stuff! I'm a bit more of a lefse fan myself.



For thos who don't know, lefse is the Scandinavian equivalent to the tortilla, except that the main ingredient is potatoes, it is rolled much thinner, and you eat it with butter and sugar, or cinnamin, butter and sugar, or whatever. Yum, yum! It's almost time for me to make about 100 sheets!

200 year old recipe for working cargo craft on Great South Bay, Long Island:



Take a teaspoon large enough for two or three sailors to sit in... cut off the handle right at the edge of the bowl. Put two runners on the bottom. Add a sloop rig and you're done. Note the absence of a rudder - you steer this thing with crew weight and sail trim. It will actually float on thin, broken ice, and skip back up onto the hard stuff. Goes okay on snow covered ice, too.

Key ingredient: "Schooner Oil" carried in pocket flasks by the madmen who sail these craft.
