Posts: 5,590 Naples, FL | You're the only other person that has had a crack on the rudder arm. I saw a little more play in my rudder (once), and when I drilled out the rivets to re-seat it in epoxy, I noticed a small crack at the end.
Good thing is that you can cut almost 2" off the rudder arm without affecting anything (as long as you shorten the other side) if I recall correctly.
After that, I got in the habit of drilling and re-riveting a lot of things on the boat before each season. If nothing else, it made me "one with the boat" more.
And I'm not sure how you can address water coming in from the daggarboard trunks. The only place mine leaked was the deck lid seal, which I just filled with 5200 when I found it.

Posts: 1,253 Columbia South Carolina, USA | Jake and I cracked one at the Tradewinds on the DLW in 2004. we sailed in, cut 2 inches off and sailed the rest of the regatta. My 5.2 had multiple cracked arms, and Ive seen a few more on various NACRA's, but mostly it comes from abuse of the crossbar(falling on it, pushing on it.etc...) easy fix with a few rivets and some new aluminum. Jake and I also broke the adjustment screw eye on the rudder casting on day 1 of the 2004 Tybee. Apprently that 1/4 inch steel screw can suffer some pressure. Good thing it was on the starboard rudder, as we were able to remove the whole rudder and I steered with the crossbar which was loose on the starboard side. No trapezing that day, but we still made good time. My advise if youre gonna do this type of race...check EVERYTHING, replace what you can afford to, and bring extras of everything else. we even had a pocket sewn into the tramp for extra rudder, but since that wasnt what broke, it didnt help us.

Posts: 5,590 Naples, FL | Good story, Dave.
Would you or any other team (present or former) have a list of what you bought as spares, as well as any major items you re-worked for an event such as this?
I would guess spares of the major stuff (rudder casting, spin pole, boom, rudder blade, daggarboard) is easy - although expensive.
Some of the smaller stuff is what usually cripples your performance (rudder gudgeon, spin block, downhaul cleat, rudder arm)...

Posts: 1,253 Columbia South Carolina, USA | spares were many, including the items you listed, we also had a spare mast, extra sails(thanks Buckwheat for the ride home to Tybee!), and extra line. We came off a wave on day 4 and landed nose down in the back of the next wave which snapped our spin pole and shredded a brand new spin. We then shrimped it for awhile as we watched the mast bend in a funny way. Jake then cut the halyard and it all floated free behind the boat and we rode a very slow reach home. So we had to borrow a spare halyard from Windy Hill(JD Solomon and Frank Moore-new Team Seacats member). That week we worked on rudder system(day 1), dagger wells(pre start), new spin/halyard/tack(day 4), a compression fracture in the port hull from hitting the beach fast and hard, and put some Amsteel Blue line around our hound, as it looked iffy. We bought a new hound, but were scared to replace it at that time. The eyehole was bent and had been rewelded at some time, but we were just scared of the weld and its former abuse. 1 thing we found was amzing was trying to keep the spin in the tramp launched spin bag which was built into the tramp. It was tight as hell, and had 2 buckles on port and starboard side to "hold" the spin in, but the tight reaches seemed to wash it out over and over again. I remeber multiples times Jake tying the spin(yes the spin itself) to one of the buckles to keep it from dragging behind the boat. Its sucked for him to come off the wire to mess with that kind of stuff, but thats the kind of thing you just cant anticipate. I think Chris and Nate had a webpage once with all the spares and preparation they had for running this race. We reffered to it alot that year. Go Blue! And Trey and Alan too, and JC and Kenny, man there are just too many friends to pull for....

Don't they have some kind of x-ray or ultrasound machines that can detect metal defects or breaks? If not, somebody should invent it. It would be nice to know in advance when a bolt is weakening or a stay is about to break, without taking the whole boat apart and putting it back together. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to run your boat through a big MRI machine at the beginning of each season to find out all the potential problems and weak points? Sorry, just a rhetorical question. I'm not trying to put the thread on a tangent. Can't help myself when I think of something, even when it's probably silly. Mary: That is what I just went to school for. It could be done with simple liquid penetrant testing. Should a series of liquid and developers. The cracks usually show as reddish/purple marks. It is called Non-Destructive Testing. Doug | | | Re: Tybee 500 Boats

Posts: 3,116 Annapolis, MD | Is the tybe site correct?
Olala and Layline are racing F18's and everyone else is racing Nacra 20's?
And so therefore the Tybee 500 trophy is just based on elapsed time?
And then the results will be broken down into class results on elapsed time.
Or did Mike and Mischa switch up to the 20's at the last minute and the website has not caught up with the boat change?
Does anyone know if Jodie Perkins sailed for Pirates today since Keith has the flue? She is one tough lady... AND the fact that she is deaf just makes it all the more compelling ... Way to go Jodie!!!
Thanks

Posts: 3,293 Long Beach, California | Tybee site is a bit off - Oolaalaa is on a chartered N20, Layline did not start. Flump's on the only F18 this year.
Keith was back on the boat today, though he looked a bit shaky when I saw him this morning.

Posts: 6,049 Sebring, Florida. | I just watched the Orlando weather, supposed to be blowing 15G20 out of the east today, with "large swells, big surf and beach erosion". Should be a fast run after a hard push through the surf.

Its more fun than it looks. Not me! Boats are too fragile and so am I! I am intrigued by "big wave" surfing. Not that I'd try that either. | | |
