Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | I'll measure ours this weekend. We ended up cutting several feet off the tapered end to get it so that the cover was still in the cleat at maximum mast rake.

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | trap line extended to the forestay bridle tang, then to the bottom rudder gudgeon....think that works out to just shy of 1/2 way down a horizontal rudder.

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | 86" of taper followed by 44' of covered sheet (including the combined split-tail traveler line). The mainsheet might still be a little longish...definitely long if all I was doing was buoys ... but those death reaching days in distance racing can sometimes require a LOT of sheet.

Posts: 3,224 Roanoke Island ,N.C. | Hey Jake, Thanks. Did ya find that the extra purchase made up for the extra trimming required because of it.I was talking to a friend who said they had to re-adjust they're trim timing on the puffs because of it. Kinda got me wondering. Thanks again for the lengths. Todd

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | Honestly, I'm not sold on it...granted, I haven't been the bastard sawing on it in a while...but still.
With the 8:1, you can let an arm's length out and it accomplishes a lot of recovery. With the 10:1, we found that you had to let more than that out leaving yourself having to double hand it back it after a big ease. I'm getting back on the front of an I20 later this year and plan on trying both to really figure it out...but I'm still leaning to the 8:1 and a strong crew for now.

Posts: 833 St. Louis, MO, | My boat came with the 10:1 and I switched back to the 8:1. I like the 8:1 better and I think it's really about the same to pull in or out. Mike Hill www.stlouiscats.com

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | that said, I DO like the 10:1 on an F18 and have found that I can accomplish the ease with one arm while driving. Compared to the I20, there's not quite as much sail up top that needs to twist off on a big ease.

Posts: 5,590 Naples, FL | so...wait... you like the 10:1 on the 18, but the 8:1 on the 20? I'm not seeing the logic here....

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | 10:1 is definitely easier to tug on. However, the I20 requires more sheet motion than the F18 when easing in a gust to keep the boat moving well. On the F18, you can let out an arm's length (or maybe one wrap) on your hand to ease enough with 10:1. On the 20, however, with that monster sail and 10:1, you have to let out just a little more sheet such that you have to do one hand-over-hand to get it back to good trim once the gust is gone. With the 8:1 on the 20, you can do it with one arm pull, avoiding the slow hand-over-hand and have more effect on the sail trim. Yes, the 8:1 is harder to pull, but it's more costly time-wise to pull the extra sheet required by the 10:1 (and is usually the crew's problem anyway ;-)). This is purely my opinion but I've heard it echoed on the beach by several other teams.
