Big thanks to the guys and gals at SHBCC for another great event! Heard 55 boats registerd; we had a nice dead-boat non-spin fleet :-) REAL glad the wind came back up inside the harbor; that was starting to look a little ugly... Had to pack up and take off so I could be sitting at my desk this morning (semi-alert); any preliminary results?

Phil, Thanks for the great pics! My other post seems to have been lost in the crashes, so: Congrats to Trey and Alan! I love the velocity! Chris and Nate, My champs, how about a report? And the H17 sailors deserve some serious congrats! I love to see guys kick butt! Some day I'm going to at least crew at this event.

Gang:

People just don't realize the "OLD HOBIE 17" is hard to beat in a blow with the Portsmouth number. They usually always win around here in the high Portsmouth races. I am going replace it with a Blade in 2008, but still a good, fast boat when the wind picks up.

Hmmm... That would mean that their is something wrong with the Portsmouth number for the Hobie 17!..

You could say... the wings in a blow really help that boat stay powered up and that is why its fast.

You could say... Wow... in a blow... the Hobie 17 is remarkably close to the spinaker boats on elapsed time ..... its fast for a 17 foot boat in those conditions.

You could say... Skipper XXX has lots of experience and is fast in a blow.

BUT you can't say... its a portsmouth beater because its fast in a blow.

Now... if you have data which says the B4 and 5 ratings are too HIGH... please send them along to Jamie and US Sailing!

Since its SAILORS who go racing... you are much better off with acknowledging their skill and not their boat choice. Remember even in an Olympic/Proffesional fleet like the Tornado... the sailors are finishing over 10 to 15 minutes... And that is one design...

Cheers
Mark

Mark:

I agree the person at the stick makes a lot of difference, but you are one to look at results. Look at Portsmouth races across the country. Hobie 17 is usually in the top five of ALL high Portsmouth races. Has been that way for a long time, so I think rating would have been adjusted a long time ago. It is just a fast boat in certain conditions. Yes the wings have a big advantage of getting the weight out to hold it down in heavier air and they can point pretty good then too.

This was an interesting (and tough) race this year; big wind, no wind, big wind, AND a lot of current trying to get up to the Statue. About 5 hours for the first guys, and a lot of DNFs. Spin boats putting 25-30 minutes on the faster non-spins, and not covering; putting almost an HOUR on Hobie 16s and not covering... You could write a research paper on pros/cons of Portsmouth using this one race :-)

Portsmouth doesn't account for skill/local knowledge/luck in getting through the bridge and up the river... I'll admit I was short on all three :-(

I also had a great time. I was single handing on an H16(first race ever) and my goal was to be in the top ten with the 16s. I wound up coming across second just behind the first 16. 23rd across the line 17th on corrected time. Had i not made a terrible error coming back I would have easily been the first 16 back. Cant wait for next year. What boat were you on?
