Last spring I refinished my Hobie 16 rudders by sanding them down and coating them with epoxy resin with carbon fiber dust mixed in to give them a nice black color (I thought epoxy would bond to almost anything). The coating hasn't stuck and is starting to peel off, any ideas?

Were they the white plastic rudders? I wouldn't exect it to adhere well at all to those. I did this to my EPO rudders and it worked great and has held up well.

How fine was the sandpaper? With very fine sandpaper, the finish is so smooth there is nothing to grip to. I am sanding hulls for repainting and will use 80 grit as final sandpaper before painting.

Get the shape you want with 80 to 100 grit. Epoxy. Final sand with 220 to 320 grit.

Are you mixing the resin and hardener correctly? Buying the pump system is worth the money.
