This was the first RTI for the Catman and I. The Mystere got an excellent start and did quite well by staying close to the shoreline for the better part of the day. We paid the Piper dearly by electing to stay, when the fleet went out as the wind shifted. Oh, well...we had a wonderful experience in the 20:07:22 it took to finish.
Yes it was a good race and this year we decided that the rhumb line would pay off and went offshore which seemed to work well as we watched one of the big RC boats sit in front of Navarre beach as we went cruising by. It sure was a long 19 hours though, but definetly better than the 25 hours it took on a H16 five years ago.
I thought we were the only ones to stick with the rhumb line the whole way....but did it ever pay off for us. At the start our spinnaker sheet came untied (sabatoge? ) and by the time I tied it wrong - untied it again - and tied it back we were well at the back of the fleet. Rounding into the gulf we figured we couldn't be any worse so we went for the straight line. When the fleet started tacking out we found that it worked quite well! Hung on for a 5th in the 6.0 class at 17:22...pic attached (so so quality)
Now I remember you. You guys sailed that boat really well. I remember you passing me several times because we kept wondering what kind of boat you were on.
