Anybody know this was still around? Apparently it's doing the Transpac, but recently had a few board issues.

From SA:
"America does a great job of branding California's golden sunsets, beach babes and surfing dudes. Since hearing 'Californication,' 'Everybody goes surfing, surfing USA,' and 'I left my heart in San Francisco' Cali' has been calling. So I was delighted to be rolling in to Long Beach Hollywood-style aboard the 60ft trimaran from the Kevin Kostner movie special, 'Waterworld,' -at least that was the plan!
I'm at the helm, we're ripping 15-19 knots of boat speed on a close reach and we're going to rock right past Pyewacket…nice. Nice, that is until we were about parallel and the main hull centre emits a crunch. You know the sound- that ripping branch tearing noise, unique to carbon that makes your skin crawl. I ease off the pace to a gentle 13 knots, as an inspection goes on down below. The crew emerge with a shrug. There is nothing to see and so we sail on tentatively, but the motion of the boat has changed. It's lumpy. Then comes that sound again, this time elongated and more wretched and then that's it. Up floats the dagger board. We are in sight of the breakwater of Long Beach. We are two days from the Sunday start of the Transpac.

Sails down, Nick Leggatt plops in the water in his trunks to throw a line round the bent stick and this is how we arrive, with a halyard to a line through the tramps holding up the board. Not quite that Hollywood-style entrance I had in mind. Fortunately Pete Melvin [of Morelli and Melvin] and his eager team of yacht designers come out to meet and greet; Fortunately the board had had 2 feet recently added. So with 3 three feet now lopped off the top we're almost back to square one. The repair is in hand.

In our lineup, flying in rock-star-stylie is our chief navigator, Larry Rosenfeld, one shower from beating up to Canada in the Marblehead to Halifax; Tim McKegney ex-lots of multihull sailing and a past core player on the 60ft tri, Primagaz; Nick Leggatt [a globe trotter, who's done a few laps on Maxi Multis]; Mr Enloe, Sir [the owner]; Chris Morgan, THE boat fixer who has already earned his lunch and of course yours truly.

Down at the dock, we're positioned nicely between Santa Pa Ti, an X?, the new Pegasus [ex-Art Forms, the Open 50] and the newly modified Pyewacket. The 'kids' Morning Light are right on the end in public view. Interestingly, 'LOEREAL' the ex-Waterworld film trimaran we're racing, has received very little press. The US West coast, it would appear has not yet been shown the beauty of those two extra hulls. Cult Multihull has yet to make its stance. So 'Loereal' this Transpac, really is the quiet competitor. If we succeed as planned, to give the 'Wacket the slip and beat Disney to the barn door, the boat already has wings- isn't the next step a multihull?!"

I hope we see some more coverage of it in the race.

And most people thought that it was "blown up" in the making of the film. (seeing is not always believing)

That thing was badass in the movie, I wish I had telescoping spars on my boat...and that big butt kite!

There were originally two identical boats bought from France. One got the telescoping rig while the other kept its rig and lived on after the movie. If they blew up one of the real boats I guess it was the telescoping rig one.
Funny story about the boats was when they were shooting the scene where Kevin Costner chase after the thief in the small boat. We can see Kevin at the helm chasing down the smaller boat, but the real crew was below deck where all controls where lead. Gives a whole new dimension to "sailing blindfolded".
I think it was Randy Smyth really doing the helming, but I am not 100% certain about that. There was a nice article in Multihulls Magazine about the boats and movie at the time.

Yeah, I think it was him. Still a cool boat even if it couldn't do everything they showed.

They could have easily used Randy as a double, if they just put some "Ugly" paint on him to make him look a bit more like Kevin. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Afterburner has raced twice against LoeReal...in the last two Newport Beach to Ensenada events...both were light wind affairs and both times we got a spanking.

She's a sweet looking beast on the water under full sail.

Looking at the broken foil reminds me on the sheared off rudder we had a few years ago on 'burner. Same kind od design issue...max stiffness too far back of the max chord point. This can lead to blade futter and thus failure. The spar needs to be from the leading edge to the max chord point.

I was out with Pete Melvin to watch the start of the Transpac Race. Matt had a bucket of gear that had to be transfered to LoeReal (the tri) before the start so we were up close and personal about 40 minutes before the gun. Took the dime tour the night before at the dock when they decided they needed another fairlead under the tramp which Matt was to get wet to do the install.

For years Eileen has been all hot on getting a Formula 60 until she saw the sparse accommodations below. She is over it now.

The very light winds, on Sunday, did not make for a stellar start. Hopefully they got some later in the day.

Later,
Dan
