Posts: 902 Norman,OK | To any cat sailors in the middle of Oklahoma we are getting some informal racing together this weekend out at lake Thunderbird. There is a kids regatta going on at the lake also but we will stay away from them and just have a good time. All the racing will be done by giving head starts based on portsmouth numbers to the slower boats while the faster ones hang back. So far we are looking at 1-Inter 20 1-Hobie 14 1-Nacra 5.2 1-Hobie 16 1 Prindle 16 1- Windrider 17 Email me at nacra_vcg@yahoo.com if you are interested.

Posts: 179 dallas tx | Hey gree If I had a little more notice I could have come. I know it was a last minute thing.
Maybe we could get together some where in the middle between Dallas and Oklahoma city some day.

Lets say that you know the distance of a given course from point to point, or around some marks, is it possible to do a pursuit start using portsmouth ratings, and if so, how would you go about generating the starting times for the different boats? I see this done for PHRF ratings at the club I sail at, but have never seen it done with portsmouth ratings.

Posts: 902 Norman,OK | Okay if anyone is up for this we will be meeting out at the lake around 10, some of us will be there earlier and will help anyone who needs help setting up or anything.
I didn't do the math on the pursuit start, another guy did so I am not sure how he did it but he showed me the numbers and it seems fair and should make for an interesting finish if we can all sail out boats to their ratings.
If anyone wants to come out or needs directions email me, i will be checking the email all the time.

Posts: 9 Norman, Oklahoma | I did the calculations for the reverse handicap start.
If you look at US Sailings portsmouth index you'll find conversion information to convert portsmouth to PHRF. However the simple method is 6 secs per mile for each point of difference in portsmouth number.
The key to this is you've got to have a pretty good idea what the distance really is.
