The photo shows 3 F16's with various sails all heading to windward. Any observations? I think this photo is from last year's A-Cat/F16 Invitational at Gulfport.

why isn't the skipper on the taipan on the wire?
Looks like it is blowing pretty good so there ain't too much fine tuning going on I would think. The Blade on the far right seems like there might be too much draft and needs the outhaul tightened up a bit (but it is hard to see from that angle and the jib makes it more difficult). But then again, they seem to be bearing off some so maybe they already did some prep work for running downwind.
Hard to say overall I would think, and besides- a small snapshot doesn't tell the whole story etc etc and I certainly not an expert or I wouldn't feel frustrated after sailing 50% of the time.

Always hard to tell from a single shot, but my initial reaction is "Get the weight out". There's no shortage of wind there, yet nobody is trapped out standing straight.

Once you've got enough wind to fly a hull, moving your weight further out just translates directly into more speed.

They look like they're comming into a mark, in which case they are all possibly prepping to tack or jibe. That would explain the guy holding the handle and the skipper already on the tramp. And the other crews also seem to be easing in.

Seth Stern: Pinching, thats why only one person trapping.
The McDonalds: Right on course, both trapped out with good trim.
Terry and Tom: Footing off, gaining good speed.

As far as sail trim goes, hard to tell from so far away.

I won't try to critique, but it looks like: Seth (the Taipan) is getting a little dirty air from Matt and Gina, and Terry and Tom are footing off, prepartory to rounding the mark.

There you go Robi ... spot on.

Tom and I were fast that weekend ( ... errr Saturday, before Tom went home ). It looks like my sail trim (far right Blade) has alot of twist and fuller draft than the middle Blade. Possibly because we're reaching towards A (overstood the line) ... or simply don't have the strings tuned properly.

I do believe that is a Glaser mainsail, that boat is now owned by Tim and is sailed in central FL.

I wish 2 things:
There were other blades around.
I could race my Blade against them! Probably be a year before that happens

BTW... what happened after the pic was taken? Looks like the bearing off would be hairy around the mark with that wind.

I thought the outside blade might be looking to slow, cut across stern of other Blade if it is having to give race room, gain speed and try for an inside pass with the Taipan having to slow turn after pinching and leave a wide path round the mark with the middle blade still on its outside.

Update ... that is "THE Chuck" with Matt ... Gina sailed with Matt on Sunday and "THE Chuck" sailed uni on Sunday.

OH [censored]! Hopefully "The Chuck" will accept my deepest and sincerest apologize.

Looks like a start to me, hence all the jostling on board (looks as if I am still tuning the jib). Tback is trying to shut down on Matt/The CHUCK, Seth slipped down a little too low and is correcting to make the pin.

GYCers, are your "starting pins" yellow? OR has the start already occured and that is one of the leeward gates as we make the beat up to the windward mark for the first time. Memory is fading....

If my memory serves, the wind was blowing across the short section of the bay and A mark was right under the condos. Comming in at A there was 5-25 knot variations with 30 degree swings in direction. We were doing 3 lap races and finishing in under 20 minutes. I remember the first start and right about the time we hit a groove off the start line Chuck in his very understated way informed me we had way overstood the mark. Same thing around A if your spin set was not fast enough, you had oversttod the layline for the first jibe.

A little cold for me but very fun racing.

HA HA HA HA HA .... one of them. Definitely was cold. I wore a dry suit and with shorts and T under and was comfy. Tom had on a full spray suit...not bad when working hard under the conditions but between races he definitely was shivering. It probably didn't help that he was wet after we had a violent pitch-pole going to weather when (errrr my crew) got weight a bit forward....the rest happened so fast!
