i am replacing my standing rigging on my p16. i have ordered all of the parts to make my own. the stock forestay has 2 parts, an upper and a lower. the two are connected with a shackle. i think it was done this way because there needs to be a place to attach the halyard loop at the intersection of the 2 parts. i noticed that the threads on the shackle are wearing out and i need to replace the shackle. is there a reason that the new forestay i make cannot be a single piece as long as i figure a way to suspend the halyard ring at the appropriate position?

If you can get a halyard ring there then it may work as a 1 piece forestay.

HOWEVER, you could not roller furl the jib, etc.

I'd set it up just like the stock set-up, easier in the long run. If the shackle is worn, just replace it, this is not a high wear item.

i have a roller furler that i designed that works great. the whole forestay from the bridle to the top of the upper forestay at the mast turns. this includes the upper forestay. check out www.mech-solutions.com/dave/furling.htm i was just thinking that if i had a 1 piece forestay, there would not be a chance at all of the shackle coming apart. i was thinking about a wire from the bridle to the mast tang and down a few inches to a loop for the halyard with a sleeve on the forestay with a loop fof the halyard ring. i attached a really crude drawing. the red boxes are nico press sleeves. the blue thing is the ring that the hook at the head of the sail hooks to.

Hello,

I have a Prindle 18 that I installed roller furling on. Since I always trailer my boat, I didn't really have a need for a halyard to raise my jib. I just raise the mast with the jib attached as the forestay. I tied a custom length forestay (a few inches longer than the jib) into the jib luff. I also had an upper pigtail made that incorporates a seven hole adjuster. This system works great for me. It's very clean and simple.
