good vid - interesting way to mount the camera.
its pretty breezy , probably a day for a more experienced crew to be on the wire. by the sounds, I think that they gradualy bear off in a pretty huge gust [BOOM there its goes]without realizing too much cos they are talking so bloody much. just as the skipper thinks about gybing, the gust stops and the apparent wind jumps back and the gybe catches them out.
I did notice that the crew makes sure that he is under the footstraps toward the end of the clip.

They were lucky to get back to the capsized boat cos they got shot out quite a long way.

this is a good vid - lots to see. we are gonna be ripping into these 2 victims for ages

QUESTION re 5'33" into vid. How do crews feel when the skipper snatches the sheet out of their hand and gives it a good old trim? as a helm i have done it and always regret it at the same instant 'cos i know that he is giving me a real big evil eye!

They forgot to pull the board up and he steers into the gybe like a crazyman, from there its just gravity doing its job

I noticed that and had to shake my head. It is just not right. I may help on a gybe while they are trying to get out on the wire if I have time, but not when you are already settled in!

This often happens when you leave your brain in the car.
There are subtlties but basically they jybed while doing NOTHING to get to the other side of the boat.
These days I try to keep my brain with the mainsheet sytem so it gets onto the boat with everything else.

Perhaps it was just practice for a fast dismount at beach.

Re grabbing the sheet off crew....stay cool, see crews learning curve and talk quietly to make gains in both sailing the boat the same way. If I was crewing I would be gone in minutes.

Brings up the question of crew pet peeves. I know I have some as crew and skipper.
As crew I want to skipper to be consistent.

That's strange?? at one point just before the action starts there is a sudden jolt that looks almost as if they have hit something, and when they go over the side there seems to be no real reason for it happenning - I think it was the hand of Thor (the Norse god of thunder and lightning) telling them that their god was really a false god???

strong wind? there isn't a white cap to be seen. also the other boat in the vid isn't powered up.
looks almost like they intentionally stayed on the wrong side during a jibe.
his rudders and/or boards a giving the whistle. pretty good audio w/the video.
will i be graded on this explanation?

I have to admit doing something very similar during my first sail on the Tiger. I was flying a hull with the spinnaker and showing off a bit for a powerboat. I pulled on the tiller to jibe like I was driving a H16 and those long dagger boards did there job all too well.
My boat leveled out and swung around so fast I slid right off the boat. My son and I laughed for about an hour over that ride. I can't ever see going back to one of the older boats now. The boat can out sail me. And I've never been happier.

Hi, my name is Paul, and my first crash on my p18-2 was a back flip.... WELCOME PAUL!

You see, my crew and I were both trapped out in a nice breeze, as the wind started to die I readied to come in off the wire. Apparently, I had trouble getting my back end in with one hand on the wire and the other on the tiller since I proceeded to pull the tiller toward me for extra leverage. Not such a smart thing to do. We gybed and went over so fast my crew had no idea what hit him. One minute he's loving life on the wire, looking out past the front of the boat and the next we're both in the water with the boat on top of us

He still crews for me and we laugh about it today though

yeah, the tiller doesn't make a good pull bar.

Doesn't work too well when you push it when going in either! I put the tiller against the top of the hull/beam and put one finger on the boat so I know I am not pushing or pulling it when coming off the wire with the spin up.

In another recent thread, the GoPro Digital Hero 3 was suggested. Available from several sources for $139. I got one on Ebay with free shipping.
