Ok finnaly get the boat out on the water. Blowing about 5-6 knots, and wow the boat is great. Well turn down wind to get the spin up for the first time, well when it was up the Joanna looks and ask how did that tear get in there. WEll sure enough a small 1 inch tear right by the telltale is there. So the first damage is done. It happens i know. So now I am wondering what to do with it? Sail tape? Just send it to a sail maker and no spin for a few weeks ?
Would appreciate and advice.

sticky back spinnaker tape is the best tape both sides and you can purchase it from you local sailmaker or boat shop.

Spinnaker repair tape it the way to go and works great, however check your boat over, there may be a sharp edge somewhere. Spinnakers do get damaged over time but having an inch long tear on the first hoist is exceptional. In general plain tears are rare, for more often you'll get chains of small holes. For this reasons I suspect that something that shouldn't be there is causing the damage.

Best to find a good local sailmaker.

Mine suggested that tears longer than 1" should be repaired with sailcloth (stitched and taped). Otherwise Spin Sail Repair tape (both sides) is good. Also suggested to cut the tape in oval or circles to minimize the edges peeling up.

I keep a dozen or so "circles" (of various sizes) cut and in my sailbox for those occassional tears, friction *burn* marks or pin holes.

Spinnaker repair tape comes in lots of colors and if you put it on both sides- and as Tback said- cut in ovals then press really hard it should hold up for a long time. I feel pretty comfortable using the tape for rather large tears (maybe up to 2 inches?).
