How does everyone connect the downhaul to the base of the mast?

The 6:1 downhaul is attached with the same little piece of stamped stainless steel that's on top of the main traveller.

Check this out: 6:1 Downhaul Guide

remember to tie it to the mast base with a piece of strong line to stop it sliding up the track

No need to tie it in place, there is a cleaner way. File a small notch in the mast track at the top edge of the fitting. Bend the top of the fitting ever so slightly to engage the notch. Tighten the heck out of the screws and square nuts.

I replaced the square nuts with SS wing nuts which do a better job of jamming into the luff track. No problems, yet.
