What type of fitting would I use to attach the rear end of a bowsprit to the front crossbar? The boat has 3 crossbars (a Reynolds 21), with the front one being a section of mast, smaller in diameter than the other 2 crossbars. I suppose I could drill right through both and use a nut & bolt, but I think this would weaken the sprit and the crossbar. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Matt

I have sailed a Reynolds and forget what the front looks like to attach the bowsprit. Maybe you could take a picture to post on this thread so the engineers in this area could get some ideas of attachment.

something like one of these. When I put a spin on my 6.0, Trey gave me a part of a rudder gudgeon that you then put a pin through. It worked well. check here- something like this part 4120. This would be riveted to the main beam and the pole would fit over the part and a pin would go through the pole, through the part, then out the other side of the pole.

I took a fitting for a tiller extension for a wooden tiller (looks like a little stainless top hat about 3/4" tall with screw holes in the brim)and riveted it to the crossbeam, and I had a shore power cord end that happened to be the right diameter for the pole and drilled a hole in the end for the other fitting, then the tension of the bridles keeps it from hopping off .You could get a plastic blank lathed to the right size of course, but it feels so nice to find two parts in the junk bin and put them to use. People do wonder why I have a 50 amp rated bow pole though. . .

Good idea Dan, attached are the pics.
I wouldn't have thought a gudgeon would do the trick PTP but now that you mention it I suppose there is a good deal of force on rudders.
I'm all about the junk collection SBFlyer, with some luck I can get past the other junk in my garage to get to the sailing junk.

On the R21 I recently sold, I used the lower 12' 6" of an Aluminum windsurfing mast, and ran it back to the main beam just below the mast base, secured it mid pole below the jib bridle with lashings, with wires running from the pole tip to the tangs on the bows. Worked very well for both a roller furling screacher and an assym spin. Had a ss cap fabricated for the pole tip to prevent crushing, and a socket created out of a section of alum tubing just larger than the butt end of the pole with a rectangular plate welded to it that I then secured to the main beam. I'd advise against butting the pole to the front crossbeam, the compression forces on the pole are pretty substantial, the main beam is much stouter. Feel free to call me.
