Posts: 337 Arizona | I broke my dolphin Striker this past weekend sailing down in Rocky Point, Mexico. I tried to remove it but two of the bolts to the main beam seem to have a nut on the inside of the beam. as far as I can tell, I would have to remove the main beam end cap, and have a 2' long 7/16 wrench to remove the DS, and then do the same in reverse to put it back together. I guess my 10 year old wiuld have skinny enough arms to get in there and hold the wrench. before I tear into it I would like to hear from anyone with insight. Thanks. By the way, Rocky point was great. 6'+ swells and 15 to 20 mph winds steady. No wonder I broke the boat. I gave a few virgins the ride of there life nearly flying 2 hulls off the crest of the waves and then burying the lee hull at the bottoms. By late afternoon each day the winds mellowed and we were visited on several occasions by dolphins while taking an easy cruise up and down the coast. The old girl is out of comission until I get the DS replaced, any comments would be appreciated.

Unregistered | Brett, you say "seem to have a nut on the inside". I don't know your boat at all, but I can tell you that on mine, what is inside the beam is not a nut but a stainless steel sleeve. If it is dislodged while removing the DS you would only need to tape it temporarily to a stick of some kind to hold it in place while you insert the striker. Fiddly, yes, (although in my case it has always remained in position), but not as difficult as having to tighten a nut inside there.

Posts: 337 Arizona | I guess that what i'll have to do is take the end cap off and see what's inside and go from there. As far as where i'm going to get a new one, i think i'll have to make my own. I just dont know how to attach the current post to the center of the new DS. Mine looks like it's pressed on or something. I guess there's a chance that it's threaded on the bottom end, that would be fairley easy. maby tomorrow i'll take it all apart. I've never had to remove the end caps from the main beam, anyone know whats involved? Is it just the rivets, or the mounting bolts to the hull also?

Posts: 337 Arizona | I just made a new DS out of a peice of 1 1/2 x 1/4 aluminum. The original was 1'x1/4'. I dont think it will ever break again and the weight gain is minimal. My center bolt was a little bent so I straightened it as much as I could. I bought a peice of stock 12' long, only needed 6', it was cheeper that way. I could check on shipping the 6' peice and even bend it if you want it. i don think it would be a good idea for me to drill any holes in it though. You would need to match your drilling. $20 plus shipping would cover the material and the bending. Let me know.

Posts: 337 Arizona | The bottom of the post is drilled and tapped and a bolt runs through the DS and into the post on mine. I removed the end caps by drilling out the 2 rivets on each and prying them off with a screwdriver very slowly and carefully so that I didn't scratch or nick the cap. To get at the bolts for the DS I had to remove the outboard hull mounting bolt, and then had my 10 year old stick his arm in there with a wrench to hold the nut in place. It went pretty good. I hope you have a 10 year old, or really skinny arms. I used nylock nuts .
