The Mid-Atlantic Wave Championship is a new stop on the schedule for the Wave National Championship Series this year. It will be October 5-8 in Duck, NC, on the Outer Banks. The sailing area is on Currituck Sound, which is on the INSIDE of the banks -- protected water.

The Notice of Race has been posted on the NOR page on this web site, and I have also cut-and-pasted it below. But I just want to first add some things that may not be covered in the NOR.

The Wave MidAtlantic Championship is being held in conjunction with the National Championships for the Windrider (trimaran) 16's and 17's.

At this point host Jon Britt is expecting 3-5 Windrider 16's, 12-15 Windrider 17's, and at least 15 Waves.

He said there is a big grassy area for rigging boats, and a small sandy beach about 100 yards away. Most people will launch, at least initially, using the ramp, which goes into shallow water with sandy bottom. Very easy.

Dogs ARE allowed at the regatta site.

There will be very limited camping available at the site. Some room for self-contained RV's. And very limited tent camping. There is only one bathroom and no showers, so it is less than ideal for camping.

I hope sailors in the Carolinas will find Waves to borrow or rent so they can participate in what will be a VERY FUN event with GREAT one-design racing.

Personally, I am very excited about this event because I have never been to the Outer Banks and I am looking forward to seeing some of the course of the legendary Worrell 1000, which I have only been able to experience through stories and photos. Fortunately, of course, we won't be sailing on the ocean side. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

The course and direction will be determined that morning.

Rules and Trophies

The Wave Class will sail under their class rules and the Windrider Class (in absence of class rules) will sail stock boats with no boat speed related additions. Decisions regarding this will be the made by the PRO. Trophies will go 3 deep in each class.
(Minimum 5 boats to make a class)

Fees:

$50 per boat ($45 will be the fee for boats which pre-register) will include all racing, t-shirts (1 per boat),
Welcome Party on Friday, cookout on Saturday and lunch on Sunday.
Charter Waves and Windriders will be available for $200 for the weekend.
Additional Shirts and Tickets for the Parties will be available.
You can register here Regatta Registration and please put your boat type in the description along with your needs for additional tickets and/or shirts along with any other information that you think we may need.

Location and Launching:

Nor’Banks Sailing has a huge lawn for boat storage and ample room for trailer storage.
Launching is down a wooden ramp and we have cat tracks (anyone that has tracks, please bring them).
The water is shallow and there are multiple moorings in 2 feet of water for securing boats during the day.

Sailing Location and Weather:

The Currituck Sound is 3.5 miles across and 8 miles wide in our Sailing Area. The water is 2-3 feet deep within 250 yards of shore and 5-10 feet in the sailing area. Weather can be unpredictable so come ready for anything except snow. October is typically a gorgeous month with average daily highs in the upper 70’s and lows in the 60’s. Water temps should be in the 70’s (at least).

Accommodations:

There are no camping facilities on site and here is a link to the nearest campgrounds Area Campgrounds. Joanie from the Windrider Forums has gathered information about hotels that are roughly 20-30 minutes away. Thanks Joanie. My recommendation would be the Colony IV.

The event is shaping up nicely. We have 5 boats coming from Ohio, a few more from the area and our local contingent. We should have about 12-15 boats on the line along with at least 12 Windrider 17's who are racing with us and it is their Nationals. Nor'Banks has charter boats available for anyone wanting to come and join us. These are 2007 Waves in great condition and are available for $200 for the weekend. Looking forward to the event. Use my contact information on the NOR to get in touch with me if you are interested in chartering. Thanks

Jon

I cannot believe how hard it is to keep big events off of each other...with:

Formula 18 North Americans Oct 8-12
Tornado Olympic Trials starting on October 5th
Hobie 16 Worlds in Fiji October 8-19

And now the Wave Championship Oct 5-8!

Note to self - Talk Louder!

Later,
Dan

Mary and I arrived this afternoon (fri) after stopping to see an old motorcycle friend in Akron, Ohio.
Wow, great facility, great sailing venue, good wind, flat seas.., it has it all.
Not to late to buzz to the Outer Banks and join the fun for the Wave Atlantic Coast Championships. Looks as if we might have about 18 boats so far.
Rick
