Hello All

I wanted to give everyone an early heads up for the upcoming US Sailing Alter cup qualifier at Miles River YC Sept 29th and 30th.

US Sailing organizes championship regattas for all classes of boats with a competition ladder in each region with the winner representing the region. The US Multihull Championship is viewed as one of the best managed of these championships in large part because the multihull council recruits a builder of a popular multihull class to provide 10 boats for the week long championship event. This year’s championship is in the spring in Gulfport Florida. The other championships are entirely dependent on borrowed boats and steep chartering fees. This coming spring the championship will use the Capricorn F18 from Australia.

Last year we were surprised at the terrible turnout and covered our costs out of the CRAC bank account. The regatta needs your attendance or I will not continue to organize it with Miles River.

The links to the US championships are here.
http://www.ussailing.org/championships/adult/USMHC/

The NOR for Area C is here: http://www.sailregattas.com/crac/uploads/2007_MRYC_AlterCup.pdf

Pre registration, who is comming and discounted entry fee are now open at www.sailcrac.com

This past weekend CRAM hosted their Alter Qualifier with 18 boats,
This coming weekend Area A and B (NYC and north) will host at Roton Point YC in Conneticut.

The US Sailing Area C Alter Qualifier is shaping up as a real interclass championship among the fleets in our region.

The Hobie 17 2007 North American Champion, Dan Ward will be challenged by Glen Ross and Ian McAlister (3rd ) in the 2007 Hobie 18, North Americans. The talent rich Hobie 16 Class will be represented by three of the top ten ranked Div 11 sailors (read that as national) led by Ken Hilk and Jim Glanden. The A class will be capably represented by Chris Brown, who is quickly figuring out the A class this year after his 2nd last weekend in the 15 boat field at West River Sailing Club. When Chris gets the down wind sorted out like he had with his NA championship campaign on the Nacra 5.8, he will be tough to beat! Haven’t heard if Matt Keenan, from Sandy Hook and a previous winner of the Area C qualifier will be there to take on John Mcloughlin in the battle of men with three arms fleet! John has been cleaning up with his Blade F16 single handed in the WRCRA fleet.

It’s my belief that the Alter qualifier is a great opportunity to compete on the water against the great sailors in all of the other classes we see on the water every weekend. Representing the Division/Region in the US Sailing championship is great bonus to a fun weekend of racing in St Michaels.

The pre registration deadline is Thursday... I need to let the kitchen know about food a bit earlier so please commit sooner rather then later. TIA

Hey Mark,

I like how you mentioned the names of the RC volunteers right on the results. Great idea.

He did it just so he could mention his name 3 times <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

BTW, It's Principal Race Officer. They may or not have principles, but they sure are the primary race officer.

Mark, thanks for the results, and more importantly making this event happen. 16 boats, all types, great participation.

Many thanks to Mark for pulling this together and trying to keep this together despite some last-minute issues with the club. Some damn good (and fast) 16 sailors out there; don't recall any capsizes or pitchpoles on a very breezy Saturday. If only we could have added Saturday and Sunday together and then spread them out over two days... Should also note that 5 boats had youth sailors! Finally, I'm going to make up a "Don't follow me" sign; as the first boat to go an extra lap on the last race, I seem to have gotten a lot of followers :-) That was just our attempt to get a longer race and try to favor the handicap number a little more.

Mark, I just want to second Caleb's thanks, and praise you for pulling off such a cool event! I hope I'll get to read some reports, but even just seeing the results is great! Those guys in the top 5 are all really fine sailors! I love the mixed boat fleet. I'm sure it's a pain in the butt for whoever does the scoring, but it's great to see!

Hello all

No long stories from me (too tired!) .... (I followed the damn pied piper around for the 4th time)... The wise ones... (aka Jim Glanden decided to listen to Ryan Flanigan and sailed through the gate (to be sure) and then the finish... Ryan who is 12 was positive he was right.... DING DING DING!.. HORN.

Meanwhile... the John McGloughlin single handed on the blade and the real instigator was trying to snuff the chute before Chris B and myslef when he dumped it at the gate.... he then DRIFTED through the finish line on his side... Got a horn... did not believe it was for him... and did the 4th lap! the RC was confused!

Since everyone pre registered on line... and only TWO people got their sail number's wrong it only took about a half hour to sort out the snafu and blast through the results. The good news is that once you hit score... its done... just send it to the web. Love online registration and Sailwave!

Great Breeze on Saturday steady 18 with gusts to 22... that moderated to 12 or so. I have never raced against a 16 in flat water and big breeze... they don't know hte meaning of the word ... POINT.... they do know the meaning of VMG..... I had to work my butt off to stay in front of them....

Brilliant fall day on the bay... Lots of ducks, A couple of private yachts (3 masted bark?? and a vintage schooner getting ready for the great american schonner race down the bay were anchored off St Michales and they were very cool... The club's neighbor had his car collection out on the lawn. ... the coolest thing was the WW2 jeep with the 50 caliber gun... the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car Stutz Bearcat??? (no wings) was also cool... He owns about 50 classic race cars)

More bullet shots (by proxy) for Rondo!

Just out of curiosity, why were there only 4 races (none on Sunday?)? Looking at the results, the first three seemed a bit short (30-minute target times?), but the results don't seem to have changed much in the longer 4th race.

Pointing a 16 in moderate to heavy air is an assured death sentence. Knowing how deep to foot (without overdoing it) is an art...

Great job pulling this together Mark.

Mike

No wind at all on Sunday so I did'nt get a chance to redeem myself. (Hit two marks and failed to count to three on Saturday) We did drift out to the course but it just would not fill in.
Ken and Erin looked very polished and ready for Fiji. Thanks again Mark.

No wind Sunday. Took about 2 hours for most (but not all) of the fleet to drift down to the RC. I'll claim second to the RC as my best score of the weekend :-) We gave up and went back in, soon followed by the rest of the fleet, although a few were smart enough to give up very early. VERY light and patchy; would have been ugly racing.

I was disappointed to not have a 5th race Saturday as the breeze was moderating and it was still early. Some people may have been pleased with only 4 in that wind :-) I was also a little upset at not having longer races; only the last race was three laps (or 4, depending on your ability to count). Couldn't really do a longer course as we were going shore-to-shore. I think sticking closer to the one-hour Portsmouth guidance would have resulted in closer results (but almost certainly not different winners). I think the results show the "faster" boats cutting the deficit on the "slower" boats with the increased time of the last race, but the data is skewed with part of the fleet doing 3 laps and part doing 4 :-) I'll also note the RC was much more hesitant about sending us out in a steady 18 than any of the competitors were; didn't really seem to believe me that this was well under the limit that Div 11 uses for a shut-off. They postponed for half an hour on their own (no big push for that from the sailors), which WOULD have worked out in allowing a more comfortable 5th race. Oh well, good racing, great day, life goes on.
