The band I'm in has made an instrumental song that we imagine captures the spiritual feeling of sailing. Does it ?

Go to this place and see what you think:

Ummm.... I would say work on that just a little more and maybe you can get the idea.

There are three types of sailing songs to me

1. Hardcore- for those wild downwind runs and racing
2. Cruising- something softer and fun
3. Deadwind- just something to laugh at while swimming

At the current state of evolution your song fits into none of those, but Bravo, I can't play any music so maybe it doesn't matter what I say.

Since you asked ...You have some sweet moments in the song...Yes, I could see the song as part of a sound track for a sailing video.

I like the song...the execution however need some polish. The main distraction is the timing of the guitars...when every thing is in sync it is great...but the miss timing between the rhythm and lead guitar interface is out of time as much as it is in time...which makes it very distracting. The delay effect you have on the lead guitar also trips you up on your timing in places. The best thing your band could do to move it towards play tighter and having a fuller sound is the obvious addition of a good drummer.

I used to occasionally play with a guitar player who was very good...as long as he played by himself...but in a group he was a disaster...His timing was horrible and it negatively affected every song he played. Playing in a group is all about synergy. Learn to feed off, and anticipate each other and your song will go to the next level.

Keep going...you have a great start.

Best regards,
Bob

I like it. you're trying to capture the "spiritual feeling" of sailing and I'd say it's in the ballpark. It seems to tip a nod toward the "surf music" vibe to me, too.

Very cool song....i'd also say not a bad start at all.. but where are the drums, they are the heartbeat of the band. I jam with my friends sometimes, and without a drummer its sounds good, but with a drummer, it sounds much better. The acoustic rhythm in the background is nice, but just a bit off beat at times, but no ones perfect. Overall i give it an 8 out of 10 for a cool sailing tune.

Thanks for all your comments!

Actually, this recording was put together on the first attempt at making this a song. It started as an experiment with a droning surf sound, and within 30 minutes we had recorded this song. I thought it worked as a song, but we needed to work it over, arrange it more, and polish it.

"Nope, its done." said another band member. He said to do more to it would ruin the spontanatity of it. He absolutely refused to do any more with it. So, it sat in his computer for 6 months, destined to die there. I got him to cut an mp3 of it for me, (as a rescue attempt.)

When I listened to it, it had a hesitant quality to it that gives it a certain charm. You'd expect that, considering we didn't quite know where it was going on this song's first attempt. But, it is definitely an acquired taste. Sorta spacey ethereal,-a sailing feeling!

I put it on the internet hoping someone would acquire a taste for it. Better this than an anonymous death.

Some people have said they can't get the song to play on their computer. If you are having trouble, then try this alternative site:

It very well could be...First take on an improvised song..Good job. From a percussionists stand point the song is off. I liked the song alot dont get me wrong. I would simply add a click track(metronome) on one of your channels out and just delete the click track after your done. I would love to add some Hand drums and misc sounds to your track because it would add alot. You recorded that with a single mic playing simultaneously right? Sounded that way. Good Job, Keep Playing, sounded good
