Yes Brian, it's all go for our opening regatta. Whilst today is gusting to well over 40 knts, it will calm down very quickly tonight. Forecast is for mainly moderate winds tomorrow (which for up here will probably mean 12-17knts), and probably a little less for Sunday.

See you up here!

Darryn,

Why did you have to fix your boat? <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

hi team! just got back from barmera. what a top weekend!!!!! flat water and 15 to 20 knots all day everyday. congrats to LBYC for running a floorless regatta, even though numbers were lacking from previous years. well done to darryn who showed blistering speed all weekend, in fact so much speed that he copped an OCS for race two and allowed me to pull my first fastest time on hagar. you beauty!!!!!

Sounds like perfect conditions. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Is there a link to the results ? Who was there ? Is there a report of the weekend ? Any photos ?

Regards,

Peter

I hit a rock at the ramp on Monday, the repair still required sanding.

Very good conditions at Barmera, lots of wind, flat water and good courses designed to maximise the fun factor<img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Rob....It's only temporary. Beau pulled his boat apart to give it a bit of a tidy up. As so often happens, other things rose in importance, and time ended up the winner!

its possible that the future father in law's influence of needing someone to show off the boat to prospective buyers had something to do with it. while he sails a damn uni-maran! persecute the heretic! destroy the non-believer!!........... sorry, too much monty python in my youth.

It looks like Daryn would be first overall. Why the strange results order?

Consistency rulez up here, Tim!! Seriously, tho - it was a yardstick event, with no-drops on results.

There was a rule about sailing through the start/finish line while racing. I was racing closely with Mark Pfennig and Brian Partridge, Mark and I sailed through the start/finish line, I didn't realise I had until after the race, cost me a first place in the race and Mark lost second place. I also missed out on first overall but thats boat racing, have to obey the rules.

So why no drops? What's the thinking?

Was it in the sailing instructions? It has to be otherwise one drop is the rule (blue-book).

Hi Tim

There appears some surprise that our opening regatta was run as a no-drop series. Surely we are not the only club in Oz to have held a no-drop short series regatta event?

It was interesting to read in Australian Sailing (Aug 2007) the Etchells holding their winter nationals as a no-drop event. I wonder if one of the Mozzie Assoc's might be game enough to entertain such an idea for their states sometime in the near future?

Cheers

No you're not the only club but I have to ask, why did you do it?

I think there is a problem in Aus at the moment because it's become "the fashion" to have no drops, and clubs are just going ahead and doing their results this way. But if you score according to the blue book there is one drop allowed (A2). If there are to be no drops then this has to be stated in the Sailing Instructions (and probably ought to be mentioned in the NoR as well).

I went to two regattas last season that did a no-drop result but didn't put it in the sailing instructions. Did LBYC? Should the prizes be redistributed?

As for doing it at the titles I can't see any justification why we would.

Looking back over the results of past regattas, it seems to me that if there had been no drop then it just makes the result arbitrary. For instance at your opening regatta it looks to me like Darryn was clearly the best performer there - so why didn't he win?

Many previous Mosquito Titles would have had a different winner if there had been no drops and in every case I've seen it would not have been the best performing boat.

The Etchells ran with no drops because they were getting too aggressive on the course. I don't think we have that problem in the Mosquitoes - I can't speak for Lake Bonney of course [Linked Image]

In a series of races it's not unusual for someone to suffer either a worse result or no result at all because of some event that wasn't their fault. If you go the no-drops route then every disadvantage suffered by anyone on the course has to then become the subject of a protest for redress - with the inevitable subjective and arbitrary result. I prefer there to be drop(s) so that everyone can just get on with sailing the regatta and put any misfortunes behind them.

Lets sail - not litigate!

Tim,

I still can't see what the deal with no drop races is????

In all honesty it would not have changed a thing with results as a DSQ or whatever it is called now HAS to be carried in the results and cannot be dropped.....

I believe that the no drop results gives you the incentive to be on your game for ALL races and eliminates the practice we have of not sailing the last race when it can be dropped...knowing that a person has won a series already and reducing numbers on the start line.

Just think...having to sail all of 12 races knowing there was no drop....just out of curiousity, how many drops are there going to be at the nationals, seeing that we are to have 12 races, if the rumour mill is correct.

but then......are we all sailing for sheep stations these days.....and just for the record, there is no money in a sheep station at the moment.

And misfortunes and errors are all part of racing....just think of other sports allowed drops....GP bikes for example, damn I fell off in that one so I don't think I will count that one.....fair go.

so there is my "two bob's worth"

David
