Hey and Happy Sailing!!
My question to you all:

My last cat was an original Nacra 6.0 with self tacking jib. We had three kids/built a new home and....yes like many of your lifes.... ours was VERY busy and I reluctantly sold my boat. I don't have any money any more with the family, college and all the other stuff. OK, I'll get to the point. I just purchased a 1987 Supercat 19 (original 8' beam) with trailer for a good price. It has a new tramp and galvanized trailer. I made the hulls look like new but it still needs quite a bit of work with new rigging and some hull work(8"seam repair), rudder and centerboard repair along with a new set of sails. I figured the grand total with everything, sails, work and all (including my original cost of boat/trailer) will be about $5200-5500.00 for everything. My question? Should I just sell this boat for a profit and buy another Nacra 6.0 for the difference of about $2500-3000.00 or just press on and finish this project? I have never sailed this boat (original SC19, 8' beam) so I don't know much about her. There is LOTS more tramp room (than the 6.0) for the family and the hulls look VERY bouyant for driving them. Any thoughts or comments for this situation?
I thank you all in advance for your comments and suggestions regarding my dilema!!!
Happy sailing and warm wishes!
Mike

PS: That's my "better half" next to the boat at 5'5" to give you an idea how much "prow" this boat has...lots of bouyancy!!

If you are willing to dump that kind of money into the boat I would say go for it. Everything I have ever heard about the Supercats was positive. They are supposed to be some pretty bouyant cats that can handle alot of abuse and still are really fast.

I think if you like the boat keep going.

Sail it, then you can compare to the 6.0.

Race cheap, race faster, Damnit!

That's a big mamma-jamma!
I'd say sell the boat at a profit. How often do you get the chance to do that?
Then buy something that fits your needs and has good parts support.
That beast might be a handfull for you and the misses.

and has good parts support

I don't see how Performance, Nacra's builder, is a better parts supporter than Aquarius, Supercat's builder. Yes, the dealer network isn't quite as robust - but the parts all have to come from the factory anyway, and I've heard nothing but the best about Aquarius' customer support. Good luck!

Aquarius is right there any time and every time you need them. Excellent customer support on all fronts...parts, service, tech support when you are thinking of any modifications, upgrades, or if you just bought a 25 year old Supercat and need to know how to rig it...they are definitely not the biggest catamaran builder but they have to rate as one of the best IMHO

Having the advantage of talking first hand with the actual boat builder is a major advantage in my book…and don’t forget that the Supercat/ARC designer, Bill Roberts, is very accessible and willing to answer your questions as well.
Visit the Aquarius Sails web site and post your questions on the owners forum to get direct feed back from the builder and designer concerning any Supercat/ARC product..

Best Regards,
Bob

Although my SC20 is about to move on to a new owner, it's been a wonderful boat, with very bouyant bows. Solid construction and good factory support. Easily adapts to rigging upgrades. Great rudder system.

that is a great boat. Rebuild it. I am in the process of refurbishing an ARC21. Between sails and paint I am putting about the same investment into it but then it should be good for many years.

Aquarius Sails is an excellent company, great support.

Hi Dave! What are you replacing your SC20 with? If you don't mind me asking what did your SC20 sell for? Did she need much work?
Thanks

Wow. Hudson, you're in my neck of the woods. I sail an FXone. Which replaced my 06' H16, and my 83' H14. You should come to a couple of our fleets fun events. We aren't really a racing fleet, but we do host a Hobie regatta. The regatta is all Hobie one design, but the fleet is open to any and all cat owners. We usually just sail to one end of the lake and back and BBQ afterwards.

Any questions give me a call, 507.301.9019
and check out the website www.fleet444.com

I'm also trying to come up with a format for a distance race next year on Lake Pepin.

Aquarius Inc. is in Wyoming Mn, which is just north of White Bear Lake. They should be able to help you with whatever you need also.

I'm boatless.

Sell it and take the profit. Sure you might spend the same to get the same boat but you won't have invested so much time in the boat......
think about this conversation......."hi I have got 5K cash and you want to to get out of the boat your wife is nagging you about....??!!"
Get out on the water.....unless you want the project with your kids....

LOL... i'm in the same boat... no pun intended... i bought my SC19 and dumped more $$$ into it then i believe i can sell her for.... lol but i love her all the same... i've sailed different boats then bought my 1st SC17 and loved how smooth she was... sold her and bought a 19 in poor shape... breathed life back into her and now she gets alot of looks...and i love sailing her... very fast light and the dealer is great for getting parts... if you have any questions please feel free to get ahold of me.... BTW is this the 19 that aquarius was brokering?
