Hi everyone -

I recently moved to the SF Bay area to work in Silicon Valley (Santa Clara). I am no longer a "utah sailor"; very sadly I had to sell my Nacra before moving.

Nonetheless, being in the bay area should be a good opportunity to meet catamaran sailors and (maybe) actually learn how to sail. Having sailed the Nacra for 3 years now, it amazes me how much an amateur I still am.

If anyone nearby would be interested in getting together for a weekend sail, please message me. Otherwise, are there any good rentals for day-sailing cats?

Thanks!

There is beach cat sailing in N CA. Lots of wind in the summer and cold water (~55*). I used to occasionally crew on a Hobie 20. Might start w/ Divison 3.

and Latitude 38 covers lots of sailing in the bay.

Usually a great group of folks over on the beach at Santa Cruz, and pretty active on the weekends. AAMOF there is a very active sailing community there.

Use to head up there when I lived in Morgan Hill, and I believe it is one of the few places in CA that you can still leave your boat on and launch from the beach.

Hi J,

I live in SF and keep my 5.2 drydocked on Treasure Island. I'm more amateur than you, i've only been at the sailing thing for five months, and bought my boat a couple months ago.
If you're up for heading out into the Bay sometime PM me your info.

Thanks everyone - it's good to know there are cat sailors up here in SF bay.

But it's cold up here! Are wetsuits a good idea?

I always wear a wetsuit. I've started layering a windbreaker over the wetsuit as well.

Since your without a boat right now your options are very open. If you chose to get a Hobie, your in the middle of a several active fleets.
The bay area is in Division 3. I used to live in Morgan Hill for a couple of years so I know the group and the area.

It's a very active and supportive group of people. If you wanted to learn more about multihulls contact them.

Hey Utah,
We have the Alter Cup Qualifier here in Santa Cruz next weekend. Come on down and I'll introduce you to a few sailors. In a few weeks we have the last regatta of the season in Monterey. The boats have to come off of the beach on the 1st, so the opportunity to hitch a ride is dwindling. There are a ton of HOBIE sailors here in the bay area. Not too many other cats. We do have a good A-class group here though. In the summer we have racing almost every other weekend somewhere close by.

Try:

or sign up for the reflector:

Call me anytime.

Is there a difference between a "HOBIE sailor" and a "hobie sailor" ?

Yes, it's the "Caps Lock" key. These two distinct types are also to be found amongst the "Hobie Sailor" <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Hi utahsailor,

If you ever get up to the north bay, I keep my Nacra 5.2 on a small beach in Sausalito.

I usually take it home at the end of October until April
so if you're interested in going out, send me a PM.

Mike,

Glad to see another 5.2 in the area. We should hook up.
my normal crew and I were just talking about how it would be fun to compare our boat speed with another 5.2.
Send me a PM if interested.

Tim

Whats the weather like mid-winter? I'm facing certain boredom with out any work lined up for the winter. I was thinking a road trip out to S.F. I have a friend that lives there, I would just have to find a place to stash the boat and jetski while I'm there.

I'm boatless.

Another Nacra 5.2 here. I am in Modesto about 90 miles east of the bay area. I am a newbie, and have to learn all about my cat...once I get the new lines in and the hull repaired. In the valley, San Louis Forebay, or Woodward Reservoir are the places I have heard are good for cats. Most of the mountain reservoirs are just about empty.

David:

Can't help you on locations. But welcome to the fun world on cats. This should help you a LOT in learning to sail them https://store.catsailor.com/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=99&idproduct=6437 I recommend it to all newbies.

Hope this helps,

Doug
