Posts: 1,200 Vancouver, BC | Lookings at Portsmouth 2006, I see that F16 Uni sailed is rated slower than the 2 man boat under all wind ranges. Shouldn't it be faster in the light?

Posts: 6,049 Sebring, Florida. | That has yet to be proven. The jib does help flow air around the main and acts as a turbo-charger, I have seen the sloop sail away from the Uni in light air, and I've seen the Uni sail away from the sloop in heavy air. Depends on who's driving.

Posts: 1,121 Eastern NC, USA | Yes, Mike. Welcome. Don't take my first reply very serioulsy....
Measurements based handicap systems (namely, Texel and SCHRS) rate the 1-up F16 configuration as slightly faster.
I assume the 2006 USSA Portsmouth numbers reflect this as being opposite because there is not much data to support the F16U rating. Most US based open handicap racing on F16s is done on the standard F16 rating, not the F16U rating. The results probably get submitted to USSA as if they are all using the F16 boat code, thus F16U is probably not evolving as it should.
The US F16 Class Association would like to see the F16U rating be dropped or at least included as one of the "general F16" boat codes that share the exact same handicap values (Blade, Taipan F16, G-Cat F16, etc.). F16 Class rules state that 1-up races head-to-head with 2-up.

Yes and they also rate both versions ALOT faster in relation to other boats then the USPN's. Wouter

Posts: 1,121 Eastern NC, USA | John W posted on the main forum that the USSA Portsmouth handicap numbers for 2008 will only have one F16 designation. The separate 1-up rating is going away.

Posts: 6,049 Sebring, Florida. | So, can we race Uni with the jib on light air days? What is the penalty for racing a two up boat, with only one on board?

You could always do that, but take the L4 hit as MarkMT suggested. IMO (and it is only my opinion), that the F16 class as a whole would benefit from having true F16 times turned in and not a modified boat code number. I'll plan to stick with a true F16 configuration, even in light air.

Posts: 6,049 Sebring, Florida. | I will too, only because I'm too lazy to re-rig it, but in light air when the A cats can wire and we can't, it would certainly help save our time on them.
So in this weekend's Area D qualifier, what rating are we using for the Uni rigged solo sailed F16's? The old uni rating or the Sloop rating which officially goes into effect in '08? <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
