I have experienced several occasions in the ocean when I want to sail without the Spin but with the Jib. I really want the Spin Pole removed because it is to long for times when the ocean waves are short and steep. Anyone have the stock size I need so I can order an aluminum pole long enough to attach the jib?

Thanks,

Stephen

the jib doesn't need to be attached to a pole.. Just tie off to the bridle point..
Unless I'm missing something..

A pole is required to attach the jib blocks.

On my boat, the blocks are attached to the bottom of the pelican striker where it meets the spin pole, not on the spin pole itself.

I think you have to have a pole, as the jib goes below the bridle point and down the compression strut. My forward jib blocks attach where the compression strut (bottom of the fore stay) meet the spin pole. What am I missing here?

Other than that - I don't know the stock #s on the pole or its dimensions. TikiPete may have half a pole he could send you <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Stephen,

I have looked at the spinn pole on these and it seems to be high enough. Have you stuffed it much? I have only seen the N6.0 have problems with this. I stuffed my N20 a few times and found in the conditions that it hit, I was driving the bows too hard anyway and slowing the boat down.
Don't entertain the thought of attaching any jib sheet blocks to the bridals. Without the pole, it will try to pull the forestay back when you sheet, no matter how tight you run you rig.
If you're digging the pole in, try to fly the hull a little higher and get back some to plane the boat out some. It is quite a bit different design than the H20 you're used to and needs to plane out a bit more when the conditions pick up. It will be a rougher ride, though.

Also, the upper boom for a Sunfish seems to be the standard diameter for alot of spinn poles. It is the same wall thickness and grade of alluminium as the poles used by Performance Cat. Saves a bit of money. FYI.

Lee,

How ya doing? The new boat is fun but we're still learning the Spin. Just ask Matt how bad I did in the Rocky Point race Down Wind in light air. Up wind I can pass everything except an I20 so far and maybe not Matt.

We went out when it was a little rough at Rocky Point and I stuffed it once because the waves were very steep. I know if its really blowing and we are in big seas that I will not want the spin on board. We will be plenty fast enough and be able to do a normal wild thing if its blowing 15 and not have to worry about the spin pole breaking or causing us a problem.

In low seas its not a problem. The Anacapa race one year was huge and I would never want a spin pole on this boat in that kind of seas because the boat is just to short in steep waves.

Maybe I'll get more confident but your boat is 3 feet longer and very floaty in the front, it really makes a difference.

We will do Anacapa next year for sure but would only carry the spin if the forecast is for 3ft or less seas, over 4 and we will leave the spin at the beach.

Good to hear from you.

You might consider a "sectional" pole. Seriously, mine seems to be fine.

Stephen,
We will be doing ALOT of distance practicing this winter out of Galveston. If you want to fly down for a weekend and crew with me on one of these runs, it will give you some feel for a spinn that may be of some help. There are quite a few tricks we learn trying to make the spinn work in distance sailing, as opposed to windward/leward. Some of this really pays off when we bouy race. Let me know. I also need crew for the Wurstfest Regatta Nov 10th and 11th in San Antonio. Interested? BTW how much do you weigh?

Lee,

Thanks for the offer but I'm busy the rest of the year with work and hiking trips.
