There are not many used Formula 18s on the market at the moment. Maybe the wrong time of year...I think that it has to do with the idea that the class is going well and Formula 18s are snatched up almost before they get on the market.

I have been hooking up some buyers and sellers in the local area in order to keep the strong sailing fleet we have going. Most of those are upgrading to newer boats, allowing their older boats to increase our numbers.

A friend called the other day and would like to upgrade his boat to the new Infusion. He will be selling a Nacra F18 that he has not sailed too much at all, for a very attractive price. I will make sure that Rick gets the $10 upon sale with this plug. I would really like someone local, West Coast Region, to get the boat.

If you are interested in upgrading, buying or selling a Formula 18 make sure to let the local active sailors know about it. You will want to build your own fleet with accessible boats. More exposure, more boats, and more sailing builds interest from others thinking about a new class for themselves.

One of the great participants in our area, Scott Miller, will be on hold until insurance kicks in for another boat. He lost a house and boat to the California fires.

Later,
Dan

I'm looking for an F-18 to replace my 5.8. I've been looking for an Inter-18 for price reasons, but if nothing comes along in the next few months I might start looking upmarket.

Rhino:

When you are ready to spend more than $2000 for a Formula 18 I think I know of about 4 or 5 people ready to sell. They would run anywhere from $8500 to $12500 depending on what you are seeking, plus $10 to Rick for this. They are not my boats but I know of them. One Nacra F18 and three to four Tigers. Some of these will be sold for upgrades some for personal reasons.

Dan

Dan,

$8.5K is not a problem for me, but for the time being I'm looking for a Nacra boat for various reasons. If all that's available are newer Nacra F18s in the $11K range I'll probably go that route, but it'll take some agonizing.

There's no F18s in the group I sail with (mostly early 90s 5.8s and 18-2s), so I'd like to pick up a relatively cheap F-18, sail it for a year or two and re-sell it to another active sailor and buy a newer one for myself. Hopefully that way we can build a small fleet. If I have to spend $11K on one, I'd have a nice boat for myself but would have to drive 10 hours to find any competition until the bottom end of the used F-18 market comes down further. 5-7K is probably the price range that would get people to step up around here. Sad, but true.

You're only about 3-4 hours away from some good Tiger sailors in Hobie Division 3 aren't you? There's a couple of Tigers popping up on the West Coast in your price range I believe.
Are you opposed to the Tiger?

The Tiger seems like a fine boat, and I've known and sailed with plenty of people in Hobie Division 3. But for now, us "X-boat" guys in the Nor-Cal area need to stick together. If we do stick together, in a few years they might want us and our registration fees back.

The Tigers don't really seem to be taking off in Division 3, but maybe as the supply of Hobie 20s dries up that'll change.

Rhino1302:

There is a Nacra F18 that you could get for about $8500 to $9000. It does not have a trailer but it is in pretty good shape. It has not been sailed much and is pretty fast. You can contact me at ddelave "at" aol "com".

Dan,
Certainly appreciate the insight. I have been looking for a Tiger for the past few weeks and have had little in the way of luck. I am located in Toronto (even fewer up here)but willing to drive south for the right boat. I was thinking this time of year would be the time to buy.
I will take your advice and hook up with the local group as they may be keeping them close. Given the state of the CDN dollar a trip south is well worth it.

Though my Catsailor advert has moved far down the list, my 2006 Capricorn is still for sale. I'm not hyper-anxious to sell it, but I'm amenable to a reasonable offer to facilitate my purchasing one of the Alter Cup Capricorns next April.

This boat went three for five against a new Infusion with new sails this past weekend, and weighed 396 lbs at Nationals in TX.

Don't worry so much about the state of the Canadian dollar. I am sure Fogh, like me in Vancouver, tracks it very closely and adjusts his price accordingly. There should be a few Tigers coming up soon with the changes to the 08 boats if you need to go used, but you'll probably have to cross the border. Don't forget your cash to cover the 9.5% duty coming back across though.

Hi guys,

I'm a former french F18 sailor. I arrived in seattle 10 months ago but didn't have time until now to think about sailing again. I sold my F18 when I left France and I'm thinking of maybe buy a used one for the 2008 season and sell it afterward. First, is there any used boat in the area? How hard it is to sell a used boat. I sold mine in one month, but in france...
Don, I saw you're from seattle, where do you guys are training?

Ciao,
tom.

Tom,
Right now we're split into two main camps regionally.
One group sails out of Sail Sandpoint Sailing Center, on Lake Washington, Seattle.
The Second Group sails out of Jericho Sailing Center in Vancouver, BC.

Contact me directly at don_atchley (at) verizon.net

I'd love to get you into the group. We're looking to have 7-10 Tigers showing for our Hobie Class events in 2008, and we're pushing for an additional 4 F18 events. There is also a lot of excitement in getting to a couple of long distance events! We may all end up divorced in 2008. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Hi Gord,
I got your email, not sure if you got my reply or not. If not send me another email with your phone#..

The f18 scene in ontario is really going well. We had around 10 boats competing this year. We had 30 F18s at the Canadian F18 nationals..I was really surprised that we got more boats than the F18 north americans..

Hi guys, I'm a Tornado sailor in Halifax, Nova Scotia (east coast Canada) that is looking at moving into the F18 fleet, hoping to compete with the fleet in Quebec over the summer (and maybe building one here over time). I don't know much about F18s and the different types. My hope with a boat would be would a price range of 8 - 12 k and fairly competitive, but does not need to be the newest and best, do you guys have any suggestions or guidance?

I think you're going to be very happy in that price range. At the high end you'll get a newer boat, and more extras.
At the low end you may need to upgrade sails.

Maritimesailor:

That is a reasonable price range for a used boat. The boats that I would recommend you go with as they are the more proven ones lately are the Tiger, Infusion and Capricorn. I think the older Nacra F18 is a fine enough boat. My hesitation would be that it has a softer mast so it loses a bit of power on the lighter days. I think someone put a stiffer mast on one, I do not remember who, and I think that would work magic on that boat as well.

As far as sails: We have a couple of guys on the West Coast sailing with the older cut of Tiger sails and doing fine. They are great sailors though. It is hard to say whether the newer cuts are faster in all conditions.

Contact the Quebec fleet I am sure there are some used boats there you could get hold of. It is a good group of sailors.

Later,
Dan
