Posts: 135 Bendigo, Victoria, Australia | I noticed while ferreting around in the back blocks of the S.Aust. Mozzie website that the first round of the S.A. state titles are being held on the 24th & 25th Nov, 2007 at Lake Bonney. Why doesn't the S.A. website have a calander of events and regattas??
1) How are the water levels at Lake Bonney?
2) I noticed in the notice of race that only MCASA members are eligible to enter. Can interstaters come and play too?
3) If interstaters can play, my crews are only 6 & 8, which is clearly under the 12 year old age limit and they don't hold any sailing qualifications. How would this affect an entry and eligibility to sail.
4) Is it only the Mozzies sailing at Lake Bonney that weekend?
I only ask because I'm may be free that weekend and may decide to the make the 6 hour drive for a sail. It however would be a big waste of time if I'm not permitted to enter or sail.
Hope to have the boat finished by then too.

Posts: 502 Port Noarlunga, SA, Australia | Why doesn't the S.A. website have a calander of events and regattas?? Not usually necessary as we dont have that many events and have a mailing list, sacatamarans@yahoogroups.com.au, Yachting Sa website (and book) and the Vic Mozzy website as well. The big events also go out in the Mozzy newsletter which is on the SA Mozzy site and mailed to members. 1) How are the water levels at Lake Bonney? Only recently cut off from the Murray, should not have lost much water. 2) I noticed in the notice of race that only MCASA members are eligible to enter. Can interstaters come and play too? Cannot see this being a problem, I will chase it up today. We sail a split states and the second round is at Victor Harbour on 9/10th Feb. 3) If interstaters can play, my crews are only 6 & 8, which is clearly under the 12 year old age limit and they don't hold any sailing qualifications. How would this affect an entry and eligibility to sail. That is going to be a problem, it is a strange rule that allows waif like 12 year olds but prevents a Dad taking his kids around the course, not the intention of the rule I think. 4) Is it only the Mozzies sailing at Lake Bonney that weekend? Looks like it, should get a good SA Mozzy fleet, 12 boats is a conservative guess. It however would be a big waste of time if I'm not permitted to enter or sail.
You will be sailing, we are about increasing numbers, not turning sailors away. I hope you get your boat finished, would like to do some tuning up as we have the same platform. Darryn 1782 | | | Re: Sth Oz States.

Posts: 502 Port Noarlunga, SA, Australia | Hi Col
Where did you see a 12 year old age limit? That's the first I've heard of that. 3. ELIGIBILITY All competitors shall be financial members of the MCASA to qualify for nomination at a State Heat or resail of a State Heat. A proxy Mk II crew is allowed providing that a regular crew is financial and permission is sought from the Sailing Committee prior to each heat via a written request. Only financial crew are eligible to receive prizes. All skippers shall be aged 12 years or older at the time of racing. All crews shall be aged 12 years or older at the time of racing unless they have successfully completed the "Australian Yachting Federation National Proficiency Scheme - Introductory Certificate" (TL 1) and can produce their AYF TL 1 certificate at time of registration. I copied this from the NOR contained in the newsletter, link below. I have heard some rumours about why it is in there but dont know the facts, was before my time sailing Mosquitos. http://www.mossie.net/newsletter/september2007.pdfDarryn 1782 | | | Re: Sth Oz States.

Just got an email telling me there is an association meeting next week, and they are going to discuss it then. Darryn 1782 | | | Re: Sth Oz States.

Posts: 135 Bendigo, Victoria, Australia | Thanks David and Darryn.
I asked about the calander because my parents live in S.A. and my sister lives in Mildura so combining a regatta with a visit is quite on the cards and non MCASA people do not know when events are on in S.A.
It'd be good to do a bit of tuning up with you Darryn (at least for a few seconds until you disappear into the distance and leave me behind)
Thank you David for the offer of a "lend" of your crew. However at the moment the trip is far from confirmed. The domestic manager has not been approached concerning the viability of such a trip or else a leave pass to attend has not yet been negotiated (and paid for ). I'll contact you by PM closer to the date when I know what's happening from this end.
I'd like to have a sail on the new boat against some other mozzies to see how she compares and I can't get to the Loch Sport weekend as I'm working .
If you could keep me informed as to what transpires at the meeting Darryn, it'd be appreciated.
Thanks

Posts: 81 To windward of you! | To all concerned yes there is still water at Lake Bonney (and will be for the next 5 years at least) so there will be sufficient water come 2 weeks time for our SA States.
Yes the lake has been blocked off but the media are obviously forgetting to mention we stil do have water, its not like they can pull the plug and drain it!
As to the comment about other boats sailing- this will depend on club numbers to organise and run a great Lake Bonney regatta.

I asked the president of the association yesterday, you have two options. 1. Pay $60 and join MCASA which will cover racing fees for both rounds of state titles and give you a result in our states. 2. Pay LBYC safety fee for each race and sail with us. Your results wont be counted towards SA state title. MCASA crew requirements should not be applicable. Darryn 1782

I asked about the history off this rule and found out it was introduced 13 years ago after one of the competitors sailed in the states with an 8 year old crew (daughter). You wont be able to race in the states with your underage crew, one of the locals also cannot compete as his crew is 11. While it is inconvenient in this circumstance I actually agree with the training requirement for underage crew. An untrained 6 years old who falls off the boat on a big lake or ocean is going to be terrified, at least if they have done the course they will know their life jacket supports them and how to get back on the boat. My kids have done the basic course and enjoyed it, they now jump off the boat and expect me to come back for them Darryn 1782

Posts: 135 Bendigo, Victoria, Australia | Thanks again Darryn and David,
How can I join the S.A. Mozzie Association? I am a resident of Victoria and a member of the Victorian Mozzie Association. Even if I did a Steven BRADBURY and won the S.A. States, I wouldn't expect to win the championship as I am not a South Australian. I would however hope that I could race and have my race scores maintained along with the rest of the fleet. I don't know whether I can make the second weekend in February, anyway.
Darryn did you have to join the Victorian Mozzie Association to sail in our states?
I understand the safety side of things in sailing with junior crews. However is it just a shift in liablity to say that you can't race in the S.A. States with a crew under 12 but you can race in the same races if you pay the club fees but the results wont count?
During the Victorian State Titles, I sailed with probably the most competent crew I have ever sailed with and he was 10 at the time. I don't know whether he has any qualifications or not. He certainly knew more about sailing a Mozzie Mk2 than me. If Victoria had adopted the 12 year age limit and he didn't have qualifications he wouldn't have been able to race to spite his competency. I don't have any sailing qualifications either and I started sailing when I was 9.
You would hope that the master of the vessel would put the safety of his crew as the number 1 priority and would not be sailing in conditions that would adversely affect the crews safety and wellbeing. However I do understand the necessity to legislate if you have a foolish person/s who continually behaves in an unsafe manner. The problem with legislating is that the people who do the right thing are adversely affected also.

Posts: 461 Victoria, Oztralia | Hi All
Just as an outside view, if I were a member of the V.M.C.A, I would also be a member of the National body, which would allow me to take part in the Australian Titles, I would assume that to be enough to sail in any State Titles. However if that were not the case, I could probably understand or accept, say a $10-$15 associate membership fee, but I don't think I would attend with a $60 membership to sail other states titles.
We have insurance that allows us sail all Australian waters, we would have membership afiliation to the AYF or whatever its called now, so I would assume it be enough.

Posts: 502 Port Noarlunga, SA, Australia | I didn't have to join the Vic Mosquito Association to sail in their states and the Victorians could not have done more to encourage me to race. I dont think it is a shift in liability issue, it is more to do with stopping one local from using young crews. I dont agree with it. I have done some research and the cut off for some clubs is 8 years old untrained crew or hold a YA Basic skills certificate. Seems about right to me. I think the fastest sailor should win the states regardless of where they are from. All this discussion on the forum isn't going to solve the immediate problem. Can I suggest that you phone Phil and ask him yourself about sailing in our states? http://www.mossie.net/committee/Committee%20list%202006.pdfI am relaying info from the association to the forum that I dont agree with, as far as I am concerned all are welcome. Posts: 135 Bendigo, Victoria, Australia | Sorry Darryn, I didn't mean for you and David to end up as the meat in the sandwich over this, however the two of you seem to be the only S.A.'s who are willing to provide any information as to how things stand in your state.
I thank you for providing the information for us even though you do not agree with it personally.
Perhaps the S.A. president would like to come on the forum and discuss these matters??
Anyway Darryn hope to see you on the water soon.

Posts: 393 Camden NSW | As what David said if interstate sailors want to ravel wish them luck and go out racing. We had Peter Nikitin com to our state titles (NSW) and with some discussion and thought, I thought to my self he's made the effort if he wins, he wins. At the end of the day he won and competition was good and he was congratulated by all the nsw mossie sailors plus every one from the KCC club. What makes SA SPECIAL? | | |
