Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | still have that one saved on Tivo from last year. I still want to see exactly how they separate the mast from the mandrel.

Posts: 72 Rockledge Cay, FL | Caught the episode last night while ironing my shirts! Very kewl, however, they only show a very short shot of them sliding the mandrel out of the mast form after the autoclave, without showing how they separate the two internally.... maybe temperature cooling.

Posts: 1,449 | Helen and Jake, I don't know how Hall Spars seperate the two but one of the methods for building carbon tubes over a mandrel is to have a slot cut in the mandrel with an insert in the slot. When cured it is easy to remove the insert which allows the mandrel to flex descreasing its sixe and out it comes. There is another method using candle wax but that would not be used by Hall because it would not work because of the heat in the autoclave. They may also cut down the sail track and then glue in a carbon tube for the sail bolt rope. This could be very neatly done and you would never tell on the finished mast as the cut was needed anyway. This is all speculation. It would be interesting to hear from someone who actually knows.

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | Not sure if this is the same as shown on the TV show, but here is how we do the CompTips using a mandrel.
The mandrel is actually undersized and easily pulls out of the finished tube.
The mandrel has an air tube running its length, the mandrel is perforated. We cover the mandrel in a plastic bag. We apply (wrap) the cloths and resin to the mandrel on a large table.
There is a two part mold that is shaped to the outer contours of the mast. We coat the mold with black resin putty.
We place the glass wrapped mandrel in one of the mold halves, then close the mold halves together and clamp.
The molds are heated and air is forced into the mandrel. This expands the bag inside the wrapped glass and forces the materials out to the contoured mold surfaces.
Once the part is cured, we open the mold, remove the part with the mandrel still inside. Then we slide the mandrel out from the bottom.
Most glass masts would be tapered, so the mandrel could be the actual mast inner shape. The removal would be them same... from the open bottom.
By the way... if you want to see how we make some kayaks, look for the "Made in America" (on the travel channel) segment about Hobie coming after the first of the year. They filmed the segment last summer here in the Oceanside plant. Cool!

Posts: 72 Rockledge Cay, FL | the mandrel shrinks as it cools and separates from the carbon. That was my educated guess... not bad for a ditzy brunette!
