apart from having the issues of getting the jib battens to get past the mast on both tacks and jibes, i am wondering which sheet i should be using when trimming the jib. currently, i am letting both out and using the windward sheet to bring the jib in but it develops too much of a curl at the bottom, so i end up pulling on the leeward jib sheet to straighten the bottom out.

<br>is this the correct method?

I recommend first setting the jib traveler cars at the right position for your point of sail. (more inboard for close-hauled and more outboard for broad-reaching). Then use the leeward sheet to tighten. I think you will find that this will help get rid of most of your hooking problems.
