In preparation for spring sailing, I've decided to learn how to tow my "new to me" boat. So far I've called my dad up to move it around, as I've never towed any remotely close to the size of an H16.

Any tips for the first time tower?

Also, is it harder to tow with a manual transmission? Another thing that I've decided to learn how to do this winter when I find a beat up little truck to tow the boat with.

Personally I find using a manual transmission alot easier than an auto towing....mind you saying that the modern auto boxes are very good esp if they have a geartronic, or the equivalent, (manual overide).
And as jeffS says slowly mirrors and a slightly wider turning circle

- accelerate and brake slower than usual
- practice backing the trailer a few times in a large open space
- every now and then first towing pull over and check all your hold down straps etc
- turn a little wider than normal but be careful about indicating 1 way and then swinging the other way or following cars may hit you
- don't get ****!
- check your trailer tyre pressures

Definitely practice backing up.

How many people mount the crossbars with the rollers underneath the trailer frame rather than on top? With the lake getting lower and lower here I am thinking maybe I should do this, but am worried about relying on the u-brackets to do more than just hold the bar in position.

When backing up, put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel. Turning is more instinctual then.

Be sure your mast is down!

Tie things down.
RECHECK all lines three times. NEVER can do this enough.
Check again in a few miles.
Check every 50 miles or so on a long tow.
Believe me, I just lost one custom wire spin pole attachment to road rash coming over here to La.

Good luck and welcome to the cat family. 27 yr of it now and never grow tired.

Watch when backing up that you don't try to turn too radically and push the bows into your rear mudguard similar to a 'jack knife'. Learned that lesson the hard way in traffic.

It seems that most people put too much pressure in trailer tires. Most boats are not that heavy and too much pressure makes the trailer jumpy. An easier tow, and a better ride for your boat is achieved by lowering the pressures a tad.

If you have leaf springs, you must lubricate them. They become a solid beam if the leaves cant slide against each other due to corrosion. Spray lube does the trick and put some on the 'hangers' also.

Check that your wheels spin freely. Jack them up off the ground and spin with your hand. They must be nice and free. If they seem stiff/sluggish to turn, the bearings need lube or replacement. To not do this occasionally is to invite disaster as the wheel parts company with the trailer and it usually happens on the motorway at 100k/hr. Nasty
.
Check your mast tiedowns are good and make sure they are properly attached. A wayward mast can be a very dangerous and costly thing.

When making a turn, be sure that as the mast protrudes beyond the tow vehicle roof line, it doesn't hook up in a tree or similar. I learned that one the hard way.

Make sure there is sufficient clearance between the tow vehicle roof and the mast. When going through a dip, the mast comes down as the tow vehicle goes up and the mast may be bent if there's not sufficient clearance.

Best not to leave the jockey wheel in place. On long trips I put mine in the boot. This prevents me from driving off with the wheel still down and destroying the tire. They also have a habit of coming loose and dropping down to the road which again, isn't good at 100k on the motorway.

Finally, I can't stress how important it is to check, check and check again that all tiedowns, hitches, safety chains, lights, couplings etc., are in place, locked, attached, switched on, working, etc., etc.

Happy towing <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I am thinking about doing the same (mounting the cross bars below the main rails) My cross bars need to be replaced and I figured I would mount them below the main beams. My U bolts are 1/2 inch. With large washers on the bottom they should be fine.

I don't see a down side to moving the boat a little closer to the ground. It should make walking the mast on the trailer a little easier.
