Any one have a new/newer F18 Capricorn that can take a few photos and measurements for me???? I really need a photo of the tramp looking down at the front beam, and one looking at the dolphin striker from bow to stern from the ground? Also I need the length of each side of the right triangle that the beam and dolphin striker make. And one last thing--the width of the dolphin striker. I greatly appreciate the help-- thank you in advance!

hi joanna, i found some pictures that might help you. my capricorn (mod.2007) is now in a barn for the winter where i cannot access it. therefore i cannot make better pictures for you nor measure anything. but there must be other capricorn owners who are in the middle of their summer season (come on aussies).

Assuming you are making a quick release tramp bag to hold weight (so that you can move it from boat to boat), would not the optimal solution be to have half the weight at the main beam on the outer edge of the tramp??? I'd go there or all the weight at the base of the mast.

EDIT: Actually, the F18 rules stipulate where crew corrector weight should be placed. Is that something to consider for the AC? I didn't mean to make this more difficult.

Corrector weight must be visible on port side in front of the forward beam.....That is the dolphin striker. That is why I need the measurements of the triangle that the dolphin striker makes. And try to fit it in that area. Still working on it and trying to find the measurements.

I'll go by my boat later today and get the measurements for you.

I'm not sure what the committee will do about crew weight - obviously there are F18 rules that will have to be modified and we went through some of that when the Infusion was going to be the Alter Cup boat a couple of years ago. The scuttlebutt is that you and Lynn are close to the class lower live-weight limit. Because the small sail plan is not an option in rotating boats, we discussed requiring teams below 308 to carry 1:1 corrector weight up to 308, then the normal 0.5:1 to make up the 330 total. This may put you over the maximum-allowed corrector weight for the class - but they may change that rule, too. I'm recused from those discussions since it looks like I will be competing after all.

While there are going to be safety boats on the course, you might consider carrying a righting bag, too. Tina and I raced the F18 as light as anyone I've ever heard of at about 270 lbs. We had one flip at Spring Fever and were able to right the boat unassisted in something around 15 knots, but we used a couple of tricks. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

The F18 is a well-thought-out platform that performs really nicely under the small sail plan, but we're getting big sails for Alter Cup. You can be sure, too, that the rigs will be tuned to average weight teams in medium conditions. That means the rigs will probably be moderately powered-up (or conversely, IMO, slightly de-powered). I tune my rig, like anyone does, to my weight - I carry a bit more mast rake, a bit more spreader rake, a bit more diamond-wire tension than the average team. I also double-block the 'chute. You can bet that the boats the fleet gets next April will be set up differently, so if the wind is up... hold on to your knickers. Lynn and I are above the 115K minimum weight, by about as much as you and Tina, (trying to gain some more). I could not find a maximum allowed corrector weight in the F18 rules. Is there one?

I know we are the lightest but we can't be the only light weight team. We sailed the H20 before getting the Blade. And are working on a righting bucket to help-since we couldn't get the 20 up either.

I just don't understand the port rule--why not allow the weight to be across the beam or in the hulls. We carried the weight evenly in the hulls on the 20.

I am really looking forward to sailing. Meeting new people and getting some incredible experience. See you there!

They might waive the F18 class rule about locating weight - it will be largely up to the manufacturer. When we used Tigers in Long Beach a few years ago, we had several teams carrying weight under the Tiger (instead of the F18) rules. The factory gave the committee specific limits on weights and placement - I think they said something like "no more than 15-pounds of soft weights per hull and tramp pouch." I would let Jake and his committee, in cooperation with AHPC, decide before I spent too much time on this. It might steer things for you a bit if you send Jake your expected (realistically, now <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />) weight for the event so he has concrete numbers to forward to Greg Goodall at AHPC.
