I am with Mark...Nigel, Mr. Ernie and all the Hartwell gang need a huge thanks for all their hard work over the years. Hopefully they will find something for next year. It is a real loss that the biggest/best regatta in the area has to be cancelled because of Milltown closing. Thank you again...

It is getting tougher and tougher to find decent venues for large regattas.
After we sold our motel in Key Largo we have been constantly on the ropes trying to find good places to sail.
We have ran into some pretty good luck at the Upper Keys Sailng Club for smaller events, and now Chip and Barb Short have the beach concession at Founders Park and have an inside loop with the managers there. Consequently, we have an awesome venue for large regattas on a beautiful beach and awesome sailing area.., crystal clear water, flat seas and always good wind.
Hope this luck holds out.
Rick

Or maybe we can talk the Lake Eustis club into hosting something that weekend?

the beauty of the hartwell venue was the convenience to a large geographical area. Maybe something in Jax? Rudder Club??

There is performance MidWinters. It's an open event and Pcola isn't a bad place to hang out. Although it probably won't be as cold as Hartwell :-)

Yeah, I'm not too keen on driving to FL for Spring Fever. Hartwell was already 5.5 hours driving for me, so much farther than that is too far for me and my gang (4-5 boats). I'd vote somewhere like ATL, Jacksonville, maybe even Charlotte, NC.

If there was enough interest Jon Britt (Duck Cup) at Norbanks (Duck, NC. Outer Banks) could probably be persuaded to put on a race. It's a great site. That would be a good option for the NC, SC and maybe even Ga. crowd. I'm SURE it would be toooooo cold and toooo far for any of those Fla. boys, but ya never know.
Post up here if there's an interest.

After Trey had the Sweet 16 Regatta I started to wonder how far North there could be a winter event.
If there was something in the 12 hour drive range, I think you could pull more boats from up here.
I've done the drive for mid-winters and as I get old so does that drive.
Thoughts?

If the BAR can organize quickly, then that should be a primo spot at Vista Pt on Lake Jordan. Vista Pt is a super-nice campground and the launch area can accomodate a lot of boats. Boats can be stored in the parking lot overnight and on the beach.... the launch "ramp" is super easy, a gravel road to the sandy beach!

The only thing that wont be available is the hospitality of Nigel and Tammy <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

We would be glad to do it, but Lake Jordan would be a great spot and I heard the Sweet Sixteen regatta was great. The weather can be pretty foul out here in late March. We can handle alot of boats since I live next door and we can fill my yard up with boats and there is another "ramp" behind my house. I will take the opportunity here to push our Duck Cup. We are changing the format a little this year and making it a 2 day distance race. One day we will sail North and another day we will sail South with both days starting and ending at Nor'Banks. The North run will be somewhat challenging along the lines of the second day of Steeplechase.
The South run will be the same course we have used for years. It should be fun as I am working with local sponsors to keep entry fees down and make it a fun weekend. I will post more about this later. The dates are June 7-8.

Jon

Spring Fever Regatta 2008
is back on and home again at Milltown Campground

*
This afternoon, I received a call from my friends at the Army Corps of
Engineers with a proposal for me to consider. They said they would give
me the key to the gate, turn on the water, and the electricity. IF ---
I, personally, would take care of everything else: Including, but not
limited to, cleaning the entire park before and after the regatta,
cleaning and repairing all bath house facilities, removing all trash and
garbage, killing another gazillion fire ants, and raising the lake back
up a few feet from it's present less than full pool level.

Obviously, I agreed to all of it although I sure hope we get a few
inches of rain in the next two months.

So, in short, Spring Fever is back on for this year and if we take care
of the campground, as we always have done in the past, I'm pretty sure
we won't have to go through this exercise again in future years - I'm
just getting too old for this foolishness.

We currently have 38 pre-registered and the web site is back up for
pre-registration as is the list of those that have signed up so far.
I'll do my best to keep it updated on a daily basis.

I know it's getting late but please pre-register as soon as possible.
We really need to know how many are coming so that we can line up the
food and have something to show our sponsors to get them back on board.

http://www.twinhulls.com/springfever2008/

My personal thanks to all of you who wrote emails to the various powers
to be. Although it may have already been in the works, my phone rang
within hours after it was announced, along with a couple of your letters
and my interview, in our local newspaper.

See you Easter Weekend.

Spring Fever Coordinator and Campground Maintenance Manager
