Informal Traditions: Got Any???

At the end of the H-18-NAs I had the pleasure of being introduced to what I think is a Great Informal Tradition a gentleman named Dave Raughley had something to do with starting it several years ago. After a week of fantastic racing, friendship and comradeship, and a excellent Awards Dinner, there was one more event that was not on any schedule. It seems “a bet “ was made several years ago …. The winner of the class would buy a round of ice cream cones at the local IceCream Stand.

So there we were, after the awards dinner walking to the local IceCream Stand, and waiting at the stand by the ordering window was Mr Jim Sohn with a big smile saying “Please step up and order” and as in the Div11 delegation we had over ½ the boats participating with juniors on board, this was a great event that everyone could enjoy. And … who doesn’t like ice cream???

So while the First Place North Americans Trophy would be nice ….. I want that little piece of paper … the order slip from the IceCream Stand (marked PAIDED). I would frame it and proudly hang it on the wall. Someday . . . someday . . .some . . .

I’ve checked the website for the H-17/H-18/Tiger NAs in Harrison Hot Springs but can not find it listed , so I ask . . . Where is the local IceCream Stand in Harrison Hot Springs ? ? ?

I give you, Mr Jim Sohn the 2007 Purchaser of the Ice Cream , You sir are a gentleman, I look forward to our next competition and thank you for the ice cream. ( I hope you don‘t mind if I don’t let you kick my butt so easily next time .)

Anyone else have a great informal tradition ? ? ?

Harry

Hi Harry, great idea. Rest assured there are plently of ice cream parlors at Harrison. We have been going there for many years, and have hit them all.

Don't know if PU will be there, but can guarantee the H-17 sailors will all be hitting the ice cream bars every night. At the North Americans in Monterey a few years back, it became a tradition. We even opened up one store that had already shut down for the night.

PU's going to be working on the water at a wee little event in China while the 17/18/Tiger event is going on, but I can assure you that the ice cream shops in Harrison will not soon forget the last week in August, 2008.

Jim Glanden is the ice cream hound - he's always found them first. At Lake Carlyle (middle of nowehere) he knew where it was before we knew there was a town there. At Rehoboth in '05, we hit a different shop every night. I got to introduce PU to Cold Stone Creamery. He was overwhelmed.

mmmmm . . . Cold Stone. . .

Maybe Chief_Tomako would like to explain the 20 NAC's tradition?

Less than a stones throw from the event site. I mean it.
Right on the launch. You'd be able to listen to the skippers meeting from where this photo was taken.

We'll have to warn Andre(owner) that it's going to be a big ice cream week, and to stock up.
If Andre runs low, we can walk a block to the Baskin-Robbins.

Are you referring to something other than Dolly? That's pretty abusive, not to mention tough to top.

When Karen-Ann is around at NAs, we usually have two ribbons, one yellow (think yellow jersey), one purple. If you win one of the ribbons, you have to fly it from the top of the sail for the next day's racing.

The yellow ribbon goes to the regatta leader each day. On the first day, it is given to the reigning champion. Dolly is an extension of this concept, just a bit more off-color...

The purple ribbon goes to the person who wins the party each night. This one's a bit more subjective, but trust me, when KA is around, there is a party every night.

During my 1st year to attend CORK back in '82, the Tornado B-fleet teams had a tradition of passing out very large B52's (Bailey's & Kalua I think) as we came ashore. My crew & I kept it quite we were underage

I remember in Ft. Walton Beach before the Mega we were racing on the inside for the Pan Am qualifier (that Paul Hess eventually won). Right next to the beach -- a very short pub-crawl away -- was a bar built on the water.

It was hot each day -- real hot -- and after we got off the water, we would crawl over to the bar and order up drinks (can't remember their name now!) that had softie ice cream, 151 rum, kahlua, and creme de cocoa. Man, what a way to "cool off" after the heat on the water.

They were so rich and so good. And they mixed the ice cream idea with rum -- how perfect can that be!!

I remember how hot that was. Liza got major heat stroke or something. I had to carry her up to the hotel room but she was fine after sitting in the AC for a while.

I dont know about regatta tradition, but Hydraulics at Gilbert's Tiki Bar after the Tradewinds and Steeplechase is a nice touch. Is that Tiki Hut still there?

It sure was hot at the Mega. You could drink six bottles of water, and still not have to pass any the normal way. It just poured out thru the skin. We drank so much HCA cut off the free water on about the fourth day, after going through several thousand dollars worth. Minimum amount to take out on the water, four bottles. Great time, but us heavy weights could have used some more wind.

Hi Pete -

That drink is called a Bushwhacker. It is the only original thing, beside Kirk, to come out of the Panhandle of Florida. Everything else in that region is borrowed (pig roasts, Mardi Gras, architecture, etc.). A Bushwhacker with a 151 "floater" will cool you off, but is sometimes referred to as a "nap in a cup."

Ah, Bushwackers..
I would say that Shady Grady could be called an original.
He made real good Gumbo.

You never knew when you would get Bushwacked, but your friends would let you know later.
What was the name of that shack? You could get a great raw steak and a baked potato to grill yourself on the deck for a great price.
This picture is from Fort Walton. What party?
