Posts: 6,049 Sebring, Florida. | Good news, another Mono racer has just bought a cat but he would like some tips or any help to climb the learning curve. I told him to come here for answers to all of life's burning questions. He just bought a used Hobie 17 Sport, rolling jib, wings, double traps. He lives in Orange Park (FL) and used to race a JY 15 out of the Rudder Club so he is familiar with that area.
Any of you guys in Jax that know how to propperly rig and sail a Hobie 17, any tricks would be most appreciated. Hopefully he will see this post and learn from your experience.

Thanks.

Unregistered | I will be at the rudder club on the a-cat this sunday, tell him to come on over. A friend of mine is bringing his hobie 17 as well (might be the same guy). Mike | | | Re: Another Convert!

Posts: 124 offshore | I just picked up a 17 this fall to sail in next year NACs since they will be up in my neck of the woods. I don't know as much as guys like Bounds, Ward, et al, but I'll throw in the little bit I do know.
Rig tension -- keep the shrouds loose enough to allow the mast to rotate to 90 deg.
Many of the boats are now rigged with a positive mast rotation system. It isn't as necessary for cruising, but if he plans on racing, he will want this. Hook up a bungee bridle from the bows. Then connect this bridle to the mast rotator with two more bungees -- one running on each side of the mast. This will rotate the mast forward when he releases the mast rotation for going downwind. Use heap-big beefy bungee!
Trap lines -- The last time I sailed one of these boats, the trap lines were strung outside the wings. But now the locals are telling me they run the traps inside the wings in a normal set-up.
Check the hooks fiberglassed into the daggers. Do this from under the boat. These hooks have a way of wearing out and breaking off.
Ummm...tell him he'll go a lot faster and enjoy the boat a lot more if he keeps the pointy end up!!

Posts: 6,049 Sebring, Florida. | Thanks Mike, I hope it is the same guy and you can give him some pointers. He was asking me how to step his mast...alone. He has a gin-pole setup but I told him best to get some help the first few times. And mind the wind direction! And the overhead powerlines!!
