i've searched the archives but can't find the answer. I have a "duel sail system" telescoping tiller ext. its 7/8" in diameter and ranges from 66-125". I had a pretty good wreck 2 days ago and since then it won't engage the extension lock mechanism. i've tried all sorts of things to take it apart but can't unlock the puzzle. the grip end is 5/8". when i look in from the bottom i see a plastic "disk" blocking the way to the extending tube. i suspect this has dislodged from the inside tube. i can get it to move with a dowel but it won't "snap" back into place. I've tried knocking it out the bottom by hitting it from the top with a dowel. no luck. the inside tube won't come out the end and the "disk" is keeping it from coming out the bottom. is there anyone with some experience taking this one apart????

Sorry, I just never had much luck repairing those Aluminum Tiller Sticks, I think they assemble them, THEN crimp the end in a machine.

I have always had one of those adjustable tiller extensions until I got the Blade, which has a fixed length fiberglass rod. I now find I like it much better, it never slides in or out when you are steering and I don't ever have to play with it while racing, just flip it around the blocks, grab it and go.

I think most of the A cat guys use a fixed carbon rod but at about $300 each, a little too much for me. The fixed fiberglass rod is less than $20 but quite a bit heavier. I don't think it slows me down though. A compromise might be a fixed length aluminum tube, but they will bend (or break) if you abuse them! I doubt I will ever go back to one of the sliding, adjustable types.

Any of the home stores will have an inexpensive paint roller extension that will serve temporarily as an emergency back-up.

I use an inexpensive aluminum adjustable stick. However, I only use the extension for minimum length when storing. When actively sailing, I set the length for the conditions and leave it until the conditions change.

It's all about money. $300 for a fancy carbon stick or $60 for aluminum of similar weight.

Well Capn', I suppose you can drop a rivet in it and have yer fixed aluminum tube for .25$. It'll get you through until you have to make a decision.
