I clicked on the banner ad of Speedtech to have a look at their speedos... I'm curious if you guys use them and how they're mounted. Do you just use one readout? I would have thought that each hull would need a sender (we all sail on one hull, right?) and the readout mounted on the opposite (flying) hull to be able to read it... is that how it is done? Seems like their leads were a bit short and would have required the sender and readout to be on the same hull. My singlehander cat has a mainsail only, but it has a boom that I was thinking about using as a mount.

Can a Speedtech user post what parts are needed to install a system and any feedback, positive or negative...

Of course, knowing exactly how fast I'm going will not enable me to exaggerate, and what's the fun in telling someone I was going 18.74kts when i could have said: "man, it was wild, we were flying along at 26 knots..."

Or should I just look for a GPS? No stinkin' class rules to keep me from using useful technology ;-)

Cheers,
I did not have any success with the Speedtech product I got, I would suggest the GPS.

I've heard that in order to use the speedtech on a cat that's not sailed flat, drag 10 feet or so of signal wire (with the impeller at the end) from the dolphin striker. This will allow it to drag through the water even if flying a hull.

I've never used a mechanical speedo. I use a Garmin etrex (legend) GPS with a handlebar mount mounted to my tiller extension. You have to be carefull because the handlebar mount looses a good bit of the watertightness of the Garmin unit and I haven't found a good way to reassert the watertightness in this configuration yet.

[color:blue] Jake

Tom at Aquarius Sail (www.Aquarius-sail.com) uses the speedometers for testing. He would be a good person to ask.

I've seen them on the ARC21 and they were mounted just under the rear beam on each hull. We are going to install these on the ARC22 that we sail to see how fast we really are traveling.....

Just buy a GPS. Cheaper and better solution. Plus you can play with it for navigation.

A local guy here rigged the Speedtech Speedo up and he hung the impellers off the rudders with the pickups on the rear of the hulls. It worked some and broke a lot more. If you want more info on his setup email me but I'd just get a GPS.
