Rescue operation to save yachties
The Press | Monday, 18 February 2008

A rescue operation is under way to save 10 people aboard a French racing yacht 80 miles off the coast of Dunedin, New Zealand

The boat capsized a short while ago.

A police southern communications centre spokesman said a mayday call was received just before 1.40pm.

It was believed the yacht was French and had a crew of 10, but little else was known.

The Wellington-based Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC) was handling the emergency.

"We're assisting them with mobilising the water rescue squad from Dunedin," a spokesman told NZPA.

RCC spokesman Ross Henderson told NZPA four helicopters were on their way to the yacht.

Later reports confirm it is Groupama 3.

Bummer.

UPDATED: Rescuers on their way to save 10 people aboard a French racing yacht 80 miles off the coast of Dunedin say the yachties are uninjured.

The yacht in distress is a trimaran called Groupama 3 which is taking part in the Trophy Jules Verne round the world race.

The National Rescue Co-ordination Centre confirmed at 3pm that the yachties had been located and were uninjured.

They are dressed in survival gear and are awaiting rescue on the hull of the vessel.

Four helicopters are on their way and will winch the yachties to safety.

A Royal New Zealand Air Force aircraft is also on standby if needed.

The Groupama 3's rescue beacon alerted authorities in France to itrs distress, who then contacted its New Zealand rescuers.

What a bummer. Was watching this story very enthusiastically from their web site. Too bad. A fast boat, hopefully they can salvage and get their syndicate to back another try at the JV. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

holy cow...I hope everyone remains safe - that's the scary scenario...the first G-class multihull to flip.

I bet they wish they had an escape hatch below the waterline to escape from!

they do, the hatch is designed to be above the inverted waterline. you can see the hatch in the far left of this pic. (this boat is the 60' but they are setup the same on the big boat)

Damn! Hate to see that happen, luckily the crew is safe. Groupama3 was on a record breaking roll, shame it ends this way.

"Luckily" it happened so close to shore, hate to see something like this happening in the "furious 50s".
They should be able to tow it back to shore in pieces.

from the groupama website:
"We have just capsized. The leeward float broke in two, leading to the breakage of the two beams and then the subsequent capsize. The crew is all together, taking refuge inside the central hull of Groupama 3. None of the 10 crew are injured. There are 5 to 7 metre waves and 25 to 30 knot winds. The seas are breaking and for the time being we're not putting anyone outside".

pff, sounds like scary moments

All the best to Franc and the crew.

That has to be the most casual e-mail ever sent [from inside the upturned boat]

Funny, I thought an Albatross was supposed to bring good luck!

This fine feathered friend apparently spent a night in the **** of Groupama prior to the structural failure.
