Mary,

That is actually one reason why I like :"Don't fear the speed~~~Fear the addiction", so much.

It is neutral towards recreational sailing and racing. It also highlights the performance part of the F16 class in a new non-demanding manner, by putting it in second place. The first place being the enjoyment of sailing the F16's of course (= the addiction). I think this is exactly how most F16 sailors feel and see the F16 class.

I wouldn't think these boats are for pure beginners though!

"Don't fear the speed- fear the addiction."

Is a very good logo.

I would be surprised if anyone can come up with a logo
that would fire up my imagination more. As far as I'm
concerned that is what the logo is supposed to do.

Grab peoples attention with an air of excitement.

If it does not mean anything and even if it makes no sense does not matter as long as it has fired up the right emotion.

Having said that my mind is not as closed on the subject as my post may infer, if someone can come up with something better. But to be affective it has to fire people up.

I know that the voices in my head aint real,
but they have some pretty good ideas.
There is no such thing as a quick fix and I've never had free lunch!

Why not achieve a similar sentiment with a simpler structure that does not require a negative contraction: "speed is addictive" or "addicted to speed." This will also make the amphetamine reference even more obvious, further enhancing the bad-butt image we are creating here.

A favorite saying in the aviation world is:

"Airspeed is Life" But if you put that on a T shirt along with "F16", someone might mistake you for a fighter pilot.

I totally agree. I LOVE that slogan, and I was hoping somebody else would say something. And you DID.

Now the question is whether it has been used elsewhere. Is that original or plagiarized? If Popeyz is the person who came up with that phrase, he needs to get credit for it somehow and he also needs to officially give permission to the class to use that slogan.

It's sort of like when a graphic artist donates his or her time and talent to create a logo for a class.

If Popeyz is the originator, should he copyright it? Or, if he gives it to the F16 class, should the class copyright it?

Just questions that occur to me, because it is too good (and too generic) to not be used by other interests.

Seems like several people really like it (I do). Noone seems to be against it. I haven't seen any other proposals get traction. Any reason not to go with popeyez7's, as long as he gives the go ahead and confirms it's original?

Maybe for a one off shirt but it sounds a tad pretentious to me, do we really need a “class slogan"?

I think this one might already belong to Jenny Craig but how about,

"Lose Weight Now, Ask me how" on the front and

"Race F16!" on the back, above the picture Robi had posted.

OR... "I want it ALL and I want it NOW!" on the front, and "Race F16" on the back. Reference to the ability to race both Uni and Two up.

So don't call it a slogan. Right now Robi just needs something to put on the back of this limited edition shirt.

It would be nice, though, to have some short phrase that sort of identifies the class and sets it apart from all the other "F" classes. Cripe, we have the F-12, the F-14, the F-16, the F-17, the F-18, the F-20, the F-24, F-27, F-28, F-31....we are lost in the "F"orest.

Dont forget that the F28 is/was a formula class in its own in Europe, as apart from the Farrier designs F24, F27, F28, F31, F36, F41 etc. Formula 20 is dead for the time being..

"Dont fear the speed, fear the addiction"!

Googling the phrase dont show any hits. I think we found gold

I have always thought that it is a mistake marketingwise to name a class of boats with an "F" and a number. It sounds so cold and sterile, like something that a computer came up with (even if that is true).

People who love boats want to think of them more like a member of the family. F-16 just doesn't sound very "friendly." What is it I am trying to say? I can't figure out how to express it.

You basically think the name of the formula classes aren't very "sellable" to the general public?

"Dont fear the speed, fear the addiction"!

I think we should drop the whole idea, it has gotten silly.

The general public will think we are delusional.

Why would you fear a boat?

Sailboats are not fast. Jets are fast, rockets are faster.

Well, Pete, I think we are talking about appealing to men here. Obviously, this concept of speed and addiction would not appeal to most women -- especially wives.

That's why my personal favorite (being a woman and a wife and a mother and a grandmother) is "Formula for Fun" because I think that would sell best with the wife and and family. But I realize that doesn't go over well with all you macho guys.

If you want to sell the boat to the public, the ultimate would be to have a cartoon caricature of a catamaran that makes it look cute and fun instead of fast and furious.

"Formula for fun". I'd prefer that over anything touting speed. After all, most of the time spent sailing is at speeds less than 20 mph. Any bicycle will do that.
