In light of the reporting of dammage at the mid-winters, I was wondering if someone could enlighten me regarding types of insurance. A post a while back mentioned US Sailing insurance for $246. What kinds of insurance cover a beach cat in these 4 scenarios:Parked in my yard(homeowners), trailering to a race(auto ins?), dammaged by vandals on a public beach, dammage in a race. I'd like to be covered in these areas. Thanks, Greg

Do a search, it has been discussed before. In summary though, you absolutely need liability insurance at least. I think it is somewhat irresponsible to race without that in this day and age. As far as total coverage through ussailing or any other number of companies.. I think it is a good idea unless you sail a beater that ain't worth much. These boats cost 15k + and you could get stuck out in some serious stuff and get really screwed and you would be out most of that (some would likely be salvageable) if you had a total loss. I would definately get boat specific insurance, not rely on homeowners or car

Greg. Start with your car insurer but have a list of what you want. If the boat is destroyed what do you want from the insurance company? Complete replacement with new? You can get that for a price or set a dollar value on the boat. Ask the hard questions such as being covered during racing. Is the mast covered, are the sailes covered, are they pro-rated? A good insurance person likes to yak about insurance. Most have no problem with racing. Make sure you are talking to the insurance company's "boat" person. Good luck. Ed

Thanks guys. I'll look into the insurance companies I presently deal with and also call US Sailing and the Progressive Insurance company that many of the cat sailors out there seem to like.

If something happens while racing don't even mention it. Racing is one of those terms that usually gets you screwed by the insurance company.

I'm boatless.

That is specifically why I pay a smidgeon more for the US SAILING one-design insurance - it is a racing policy based on agreed-value. I got the charter option, too - my boat is covered if I charter it, and I am covered on any charter boat. Really a well-thought-out racer's policy.

Thus endeth the advert. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

The most important one over here is the one we call third party, or public liability. That's where you smash into someone, injure (or worse)them, and are sued for a million or more. That's the cover every Club and race orgaiser demands.
