Hi,

I tried doing a search on the site to see if it has been covered already.

I'd like to know what people do appart from getting the mandatory liability insurance at events. I'm trying to get a charter boat, but there does'nt seem to be insurance for the boat available which makes me nervous. Do people actually race without being covered if you ram somebody of if you go through a sail? The amount of deposit won'nt cover all damages.

Tough question, I think - depends a lot on who's boat you're using and what your own policy covers. I can only speak for myself, but when I faced the decision I bought a liability and damage policy that covers me, my boat, anyone I hit if it is my fault, and (more to your point) includes any boat I charter. Few policies do that - make sure you do the reading or ask pointed, specific questions of your agent.

Thanks John for your input. May I ask who is your insurance company?

You can ask, but you might not like the answer; I use the US SAILING one-design insurance. It costs more than the Progressive policy I used to have, but the coverage is much better.

You sound frustrated that you did not get lots of answers about this. Problem here that very few people on this forum charter boats. They all own them. You are asking about a different kind of insurance than they carry so it is hard to answer.

When I went to France for the Worlds I chartered a boat. I tried to get insurance here, from my carrier, and could not. I did get a quote for "out of the country" insurance of about $500 for a week of sailing from another vendor. I told the organizers in France about this and they we able to set up insurance for me at $10 a day. They had many people contact them about the same thing.

If we have an event in the US that is a borrowed boat situation then the event usually takes care of those details.

Later,
Dan

Thanks Dan. Yes i'm a little bit frustrated to the risk involed in chartering a boat in Spain. I can understand that most are bringing their boats to the events. I emailed the organizers last week and did you get an email back. As the hotels lodging facilities must be filling up quickly, I just wanted to take a decision of going or not. I don't have the coins to buy 2 Tigers this year.

I'm waiting to get an answer from my insurance broker.
