It is truly amazing how much of our technology has been, and is, and will be, defined ahead of time by science fiction writers. I saw a television special devoted to just that a couple of years ago and it was absolutely amazing, down to the point of predicting where Cape Canaveral Space Center would be located something like 100 years ago by a European author.
