Mark,

You should get on sailing anarchy and tell them to stop "pre-registering" over there and do it for real.

Hmm... ever try to tell a 505 sailor what to do?

Think teenager!

I know the club will be happy to collect their 10 dollar on site registration fee ... they need the $$$ (I sent Macy all of the links and info)

From the scorekeeper's point of view... you only HAVE to type in a sail number... all the rest is gravy. ... You save a lot of effort that way. Of course, the newspapers and public like to see the names and home towns for their little filler articles.

Yes, in fact, everytime I sail these days I try to tell a 505 sailor what to do, I've got one as my crew :P

How's that working?

I bet its a similar mind bender for them as the American cup teams now trying to sail the Extreme 40's practicing for the next cup.

Its interesting. He's got a lot of good ideas, and is a really good sailor, but he's got a lot of monohull-esque things to reconsider. Sometimes he thinks he has a better idea of how to do things that we, as a multihull community, have had figured out for ages...

...but thats a good thing too. Its made me stop and think about some things such as light air sail trim, in different ways. Outside the box, if you will.

What is really cool though, is that I've got him hooked on the cats. We were blasting down Lake Lanier on Saturday just driving through some huge motorboat wake on a downwind reach, and he goes "damn, this boat is just a ....machine"

Bottom line is, I still have a lot more to learn from him than he has to learn from me IMO. I'm also grateful that I found someone that has the fortitude to put up with my personality defects to sail with me:)

Sailors are Sailors

Eventually the boat speaks to both of you.

As our sport consolidates... Its a good thing to mix and match.

Lots to be said for racing a variety of boats.

I learn lots of things racing on the mono's on Wed nights and some of the big cats or tri's on weekends.

The 5o5 class has their class rep calling or emailing the fleet from Florida to New York. If a boat is available.... they work to get a helm and sheet to borrow the boat and race. They call you out and insult you if you are not posting!
Seems to be effective!

Pre Registration closes tonight:
http://www.sailregattas.com/crac/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=96

On site registration surcharge applies

If the scuttlebutt proves out ... we expect almost 20 505's over 20 A cats and 7 Nacra 20's)

I get one more chance to watch this crazy rabbit start that 5o5's use.. Always interesting!

As I understand it... they don't use a fixed starting line

The fleet gathers above the fixed start/finish line.
On the time signal the rabbit... a pre selected 505. will start leeward of the fleet on port going up wind at max speed.
A power boat will follow on his transom. keeping other 505's off his butt.

The 505 fleet will start on starbord AFTER the rabbit has passed them.

They feel that it gives you the fairest and cleanest start relative to our fixed line starts.

I am still trying to figure out how.. you would get a high speed start with boats around you.... having to time the rabbit etc etc.

It is commonly used when race committee is scarce. I wouldn't think it would be used when we have a full blown race committee. The rabbit is typically required to hold on port tack for 1 or 2 minutes depending on the fleet. If your not the rabbit then you have from the first gun until the rabbit is released at agreed upon time interval. The rabbit is at a disadvantage most of the time unless the wind goes right as in way right. Also, if you are on starboard and hit the rabbitt you should be dsq perhaps for the rest of races or made to be the rabbit after being dsq for that race. Depending on how large the fleet, an agreement needs to be reached on who becomes the rabbit for the next race. Bigger fleet, then I have seen 5h place boat becomes the rabbit. Smaller fleet then 2rd finisher. Small fleet than 1st.

I wasn't asked but if I were, my opinion would be race on the course provided with in the normal starting line because of the other 30 or so boats on the same course, or race on a different course without power boat chasing rabbit. YMMV!

Huh, I didnt know the 505's used rabbit starts in regattas.

505 have one person on the wire right? So you have one person trapped out, crossing the stern of a POWER boat? That doesnt sounds safe. Especially in light air, when the lead rabbit is moving slow.

I guess it keeps people from being early, they dont want to run into the prop of the power boat.

The windsurfers use a power boat too, but that boat is moving at full throttle, it doesnt seem fair on a long start line, it would seem like you always want the port end of the line to get across the line first, no matter if the line is square.
