Be sure to come to the Eagle Creek Sailing Club for the Wave Midwest Championship, as part of the Mayor's Cup Regatta. The Eagle Creek Sailing Club, on the northwest side of Indianapolis, is the host club. The weekend of May 16th to 18th is the week before the famous Indianapolis 500, so there are lots of race-related activities throughout the community.

I want to support this regatta any way I can, I just can't be there in person, tough time of year for us to get away from the beach biz down here in the Keys.

If I was 1-day driving distance to this event I'd be there. I know the driving forces behind it and we need to encourage their efforts. Wonderful people!

It's going to be a great event and a great addition to the Wave fleet calendar.

Please come out and support it!

More info from a letter sent out by the event coordinator, Skip Kaub:

Midwest Hobie Wave Championships at Mayors Cup Regatta

This is the first year for the Midwest Hobie Wave Championships at Eagle Creek Reservoir. The Mayors Cup Regatta, long standing for more than 30 years, will be including our fleet as a class race. There will be trophies for those that place and plenty of fun after the races with food fun and a party that includes a live band. This is an opportunity to bring back catamaran racing on Eagle Creek, which at one time hosted the Hobie Nationals.

The date for this race? May 16th, 17th and 18th! This is only about a month away! We look forward to seeing you there.

Remember that for those who are interested in automobile racing, the Indianapolis 500 is in town and this regatta sails the weekend prior to the 500. That means that Indianapolis will be buzzing with excitement with parties and street happenings around town, which is a stones throw away.

Questions & Answers

Where is the registration site?
The registration desk, boat ramp, parties and all other race related events will be held at the Eagle Creek Sailing Club. Their address is 8901 West 46th Street.

How do I get there?
From points north, get on West leg of 465 south bound. Get off on exit 17 and at the bottom of ramp turn right on 38th street. Proceed about a mile and the road turns south and becomes Dandy Trail. Continue on another mile and turn right on West Crawfordsville Road/136. Continue on for about a mile until you reach North Raceway Road. Turn right and go to West 46th street. Turn right into the drive that leads to the lake and the harbor.
From points South, get on the West leg of 465 and go north to 38th street west and follow the directions above.

Accommodations?
Enclosed on a separate page is a list of recommended, nearby motels/hotels.

What kind of clothes do I need ashore?
Very casual -- shorts and t-shirts are acceptable attire. Indianapolis weather in May is dicey but you will find the days in the 70s and 50s in the evening. The water temperature will be around 60s so pack some warm clothes just in case.

Are there places to get sailing parts?
The nearest stocking Hobie dealer, Sailboats Inc. (317) 872 7845 is in Indianapolis about twenty minutes away. There is a West Marine about 40 minutes away and there are all of the home improvement stores on 38th street very close to the Lake.

How do I register?
Please refer to the attached PDF documents one of which contains the registration form. Because we are attached to the Mayors Cup Regatta they will handle all of the registration and other administrative details

Are boats available to rent?
We have some boats available for charter and are available on a first come first serve basis. We are working on getting more boats so please contact us if you need to charter a boat. The cost of this will be $250.00 for the weekend and they will be beached and ready to sail, complete with sails. If you have any questions about chartering boats, please call Skip Kaub at 317 219 9552 or email: skip at inquisitiveeye dot com.

If I have a H14, H14 Turbo or H16 can I race with the Hobie Waves?
The Midwest Hobie Wave Championship is a class race. If you are planning to race this weekend register no matter what. Depending on how things shape up, a decision will be made the day of the race to include other boats in the Wave fleet or have the cats other than Waves race with the Portsmouth fleet.

What is there to do for non-racing family and friends?
Please take a look at the attached Things to do section for ideas. Please remember that the greatest spectacle in auto sports racing, the Indianapolis 500 is in town and race activities around town will be in full swing.

Wave racing is too intimidating for most sailors. Too much like supercross -- it's all in the starts and mark roundings and picking the right lines (tactics). I'm sorta serious.

Skip has been to Rick's seminar, so I'm sure he'll have the advantage. I've just been playing around on my own; never raced another Wave head-to-head. When I raced monohulls, I usually watched from the back of the pack. But no matter what, it should be a LOT of fun!

I just noticed last night that a Wave is featured on the cover of the "Start Sailing Right" book our club (and many others) use for training classes.

I never noticed that, either. Thanks for pointing it out.

Skip says he still has 4 charter boats available, but a bunch of us are bringing our own! Come on and join in on the fun!

Indianapolis is centrally located, so it won't cost you "too" much to drive here, no matter where you're coming from!
