Howdy Eric,
Have you ever sailed on San Luis Reservoir? It looks like a good sized lake with pretty good wind. All the times I've driven by there, I've never seen anyone on the water.

I intend to do some sailing on San Luis, this year. As I understand it, "the forebay," on the east side remains open when the wind is "up." Even after they have closed down the main body of water for too much wind; approx. 25+

I drive by the reservoir and forebay on a regular basis. The only time I trailered out there to sail, there was no wind. Nearly every other time I drive by the wind is howling. I've hear the reservoir can be quite tricky--very erratic wind direction and stregth. I've heard the forebay is better in that sense, but I don't know the depth of the water or the height of the power lines overhead.

Typically if I'm headed up that way I either go to Santa Cruz or my home town of Half Moon Bay.

As far as San Luis Res it's a great place, but the reason you don't see sailboats on the upper lake is that it fires up to 40 kts in about 5 minutes, so you have to watch it. There are a series of warning lights over the dam to alert boaters of the conditions. I've heard that the sheriff will hand out steep tickets if they have to come out and rescue you and the warning lights are on.

I take the scouts out on the forebay with their fleet of 6 H16's. That's the safer option and it still howls there just not as fierce. Watch the depth if you have boards!!

Not to hijack your thread E, but you guys should make it down to the Moss Landing challenge this year. 13 Mile broad reach from SC to Moss. 3 bands, BBQ and full bar. And you should definitely come visit me in SC.

Good advice Jeremy. The other problem with the main lake is the water is kind of sticky. You will get a film on your boat and its hard to get off. The forbay is good for sailing but keep the boards about half . The h-18 is good most places but the tiger will drag boards there. Also you may want to check out woodward res. in oakdale. Fleet 20 does a monthly fun sail and is a good sailing lake.

Is Moss Landing open to non Hobies?

One thing to note - There are two Commodore's Regattas this year at Huntington Lake. June 21-22 hosted by MHRA, and June 28-29, hosted by Hobie Division 3. The first is open to everyone, the second is Hobie-only. It is unfortunate that the names are the same, but there it is.

That's bizarre; I thought the Hobie-only regatta was the Mile High at the beginning of August. I hope the Hobie guys come early and sail in this regatta as well--the 16s and 20s have always had a strong showing and some great sailors.

I was quite interested in the Moss Landing race as it would be a blast in an F16 spinnaker cat but when I looked into it a couple years ago they said there was no class for me, not even an open class. Has that changed?

Officially, Moss is a Div 3 Hobie event. However, there are other local fleets that funsail down the coast. This is organized by the local kayak shop. Maybe MHRA would like to borrow the Surf City Skiff and do a separate start for the Sat downwind run? I can't offer it on Sun. There's a fleet of Windriders, a few monos etc that just sail in a pack to Moss. Our party pretty much kicks! We fire the cannon, BBQ and hang out with all of our great sailing friends and family.

This year the shadowy and mysterious governing body of the event wants to have a music festival in conjunction with the regatta. We'll see what happens.

Mostly, I want a rematch with Eric. Last time we were on the water together, it was too rough to catch him downwind in the Surf City skiff. I want to try him on something more appropriate like the FX next time. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Here's a little vid of the 2006 Alter Cup Qualifier where a certain Taipan going sooo fast downwind I couldn't catch him due to the bumpy conditions. Very slow action, topped out at about 10kts at best. The vid quality is bad, which I why I don't share this one much.
